We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Scorpio Uzuh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Scorpio, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Ahhh man, do I wish I could turn back the hands of time.
My brand name, Sins Of Many, as “dark” as it may initially sound, is an actual interpretation of me wishing I would’ve tapped into my creative side much sooner. It’s translated as an apology to my younger creative self, when i didn’t have the mental fortitude to stop everything I was doing and just pursue what I loved. In that way, I think we can all relate; we ll have those moments we look back at and question ourselves as to what we could’ve done differently, gone left instead of right, said yes instead of no. It’s in those moments we’re lying to our true selves…hence the name, Sins Of Many. That’s the bond that ties us all together, and why my brand is for the people.
It started sewing in 2019 when I was literally at the lowest point in my life (mental health is real y’all). I was just at a real crossroads. And as we all know, depression and self-doubt leads to finding solace in other unhealthy means; for me, it was living a sedentary lifestyle. Within months I found myself out of shape and not fitting into my regular commercial clothes. But even before all that, I felt as though commercial/retail fashion had become so stagnant and “basic”, so it was a perfect storm of not wanting to shop while not being able to fit the clothes I had bought already. From that tragedy, I just decided to cut out the middle-man and start making clothes myself.
Being a self-taught sewist, I see things differently. Do I think you have to have a formal education in the arts to be successful nowadays? No. Back then would I have thought so? Yes, absolutely. I probably would’ve tried to get into FIT or Parsons and use that as a platform into the fashion industry. Who knows where I would’ve been at this point in my life; NYFW, a collection, a brick & mortar maybe…there’s no telling.
But what I do know is this, God’s plan is the best plan. I am exactly where he wants me to be…and I’m confidently enjoying the ride.

Scorpio, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My sewing journey goes like this:
On Sunday I looked for black/minority owned sewing classes online and stumbled upon Mimi G & Norris Ford’s online instructional school called Sew It Academy. Turns out Norris really was in tune with my overall aesthetic and Mimi G is the friggin’ GOAT of DIY Sewing so I knew I had to subscribe instantly!. By Monday I had bought my first sewing machine, by Tuesday I had already watched all their courses. By Thursday I had made my first shirt and by the end of the weekend I had created the name of my brand Sins Of Many. The rest, as they say, is history!
Nowadays I do custom garments for all my clients. I also have my very own pattern that was distributed by Mimi G’s new pattern company called Know Me patterns, which is a minority-based brand made for us, by us. You can find those patterns online at WWW.SOMETHINGDELIGHTFUL.COM and in your local Joann’s, Hobby Lobby and/or crafts stores.
The biggest thing I think that separates me from others is my background: I’m a black, former collegiate athlete male in a female-dominated field (sewing) with a medical degree who taught himself how to sew. That’s it, that’s my story! But seriously, I love the diversity in my background and all the life lessons that it has taught me. The biggest takeaway I get from that is that I can relate to soooooo many different walks of life and people who are either struggling to start sewing, embarrassed to admit they sew or have been sewing and nervous to show their work. It’s in that regard, that I take most joy in!
The next step for me is to tap into some sewing projects that I want to being to Houston; whether it be sewing classes, fashion shows and mini capsule collections.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think society is slowing recognizing more and more true creatives and steering away from the commercial fashion industry. There are just so many bright, revolutionary artists out there making wearable art at a level that is truly unique and one of kind. Show like The Hype and Next In Fashion have really done a great job exemplifying those type of creatives.
But we live in a social media driven world, and it’s unfortunate because we have a younger generation that is encouraged by the trends and fashion that they see on social media. We have Instagram influencers that are defining mens fashion as wearing suits, or the same redundant outfits. Like who is wearing a suit to go grocery shopping on a Wednesday?! Instead, how influencers partner with creatives and change the game! Bring practical fashion back to the people and make it ok to do so accordingly.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
Slow Fashion matters. Fast Fashion, and I’m not trying to throw any shade at any one company, is literally destroying our world, endangering the lives of their workers and continues to set fashion back rather being innovative and moving forward.
I think we as a whole should take the time to really tap in and search for creatives that really exemplify your fashion story. All it takes is google or an instagram search. You looking for male vintage-inspired designers, they have it. Female 90’s themed modern wear, she’s out there! Modern streetwear unique pieces, I promise you, we out here (myself included)! It just takes a little effort and a lot of love.
Fast fashion is not the answer, and believe me, I love to shop designer brands just as much as the next person…but every garment has a story, and once I learned that their story was built on the backs of underpaid workers in unsafe working conditions in additionally unlawful practices, I decided to build my own brand. And while I still wear designer, that designer brand is only mine…Sins Of Many.
