We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Schakara Arrazola-tiscareno. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Schakara below.
Schakara, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I am happiest working for myself, pursuing my own dreams and passions. Being a business owner is not easy—it demands grit, dedication, and resilience. You can’t simply “milk the clock”; every day is a fresh opportunity to invest in yourself and your craft.
The lack of traditional hours can make balancing life and work challenging at times, but it also offers the flexibility and openness I need as both a wife and a mom. I’ve always believed the traditional workforce isn’t designed to fully support working mothers, which meant I had to get creative when I had my son.
I was fortunate to grow up with a father who was both a single dad and a business owner, and his example inspired me. Now, I have the privilege of being active and present for my child every single day, all while building something meaningful for our future.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Schakara , a multifaceted entrepreneur with a passion for creativity, wellness, and community-building. My journey into my industries has been a blend of personal inspiration and a drive to serve others in unique ways. I own and operate three distinct businesses:
1. Shears with Shakara – My hairstyling studio where I specialize in extensions and tailored beauty services. My goal is to help clients feel confident and beautiful, whether it’s through a transformative haircut or a custom style that enhances their unique personality.
2. Southern Colorado Fashion – Through this platform, I create quarterly fashion shows and community events that highlight local talent, connect creatives, and provide a space to celebrate art, style, and culture.
3. Love and Withstand – An alternative medicine practice focused on soul care and spiritual healing. I help individuals find balance, clarity, and inner peace through holistic therapies tailored to their personal needs.
Each business I run solves different problems: from enhancing self-esteem, to fostering creative connections, to providing tools for emotional and spiritual growth. What truly sets me apart is my ability to weave my experiences and values into everything I do.
Above all, I strive to create spaces—whether physical or emotional—where people feel seen, valued, and empowered to be their best selves.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I am deeply inspired by the principles of The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. These agreements have shaped not only my personal life but also the way I approach my businesses and serve my clients.
1. Be impeccable with your word: In all my businesses—whether it’s hairstyling, fashion, or alternative medicine—I ensure that my communication is clear, honest, and kind. I pride myself on creating trust and delivering exactly what I promise, whether that’s a transformative hairstyle, an empowering fashion show, or a healing experience.
2. Don’t take anything personally: Being a business owner comes with its challenges, and not every situation or reaction is about me. This mindset helps me stay grounded, focused, and open to feedback without allowing setbacks to derail my vision.
3. Don’t make assumptions: I make it a priority to deeply listen to my clients, colleagues, and collaborators. Whether someone is sharing their vision for a hairstyle or seeking guidance in their healing journey, I have learned to ensure, I understand their needs and desires before taking action.
4. Always do your best: In everything I do, I strive for excellence. I aim to bring my whole self—my creativity, passion, and dedication—to my work. My clients and community deserve nothing less, and this commitment to quality is what sets me apart.
By incorporating these principles into my businesses, I’ve been able to create spaces that uplift and empower others. I’m passionate about helping my clients feel confident, connected, and cared for.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Growing up with a father who was both a single parent and a business owner, I witnessed firsthand the value of hard work and independence. This instilled a sense of resilience and self-reliance in me.
However, while building my own businesses, I realized that carrying the weight of everything alone is neither sustainable nor necessary.
Over time, I learned that seeking help and delegating are not signs of weakness but rather strategies for growth and balance. Whether it’s collaborating with a team for Southern Colorado Fashion events, trusting and building a support system to help. I embrace and enjoy the power of shared effort.
I can focus on my strengths, lean on others where needed, and create space for even greater success in my community and personal life. It’s a shift from “doing it all” to “building it together.”
