We recently connected with Schaffin Mweemba and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Schaffin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about serving the underserved.
Orphans and small businesses, whether owned by individuals from black or white communities, are both deserving of support for several compelling reasons:
1. Vulnerability: Orphans, especially those without extended family support, are among the most vulnerable members of society. Without parental guidance or financial stability, they face significant challenges in accessing education, healthcare, and basic necessities. Similarly, small businesses, particularly those owned by individuals from marginalized communities, often lack the resources and networks available to larger corporations, making them susceptible to economic instability and closure.
2. Economic Empowerment: Supporting small businesses, regardless of the owner’s background, is essential for fostering economic empowerment and entrepreneurship within communities. By investing in local businesses, especially those owned by minorities, we not only stimulate economic growth but also create job opportunities, reduce unemployment, and promote self-sufficiency.
3. Diversity and Inclusion: Providing support to both black and white-owned businesses fosters diversity and inclusion within the marketplace. Embracing a diverse range of entrepreneurs enriches the business landscape, encourages innovation, and promotes equitable access to economic opportunities for individuals from all backgrounds.
4. Social Cohesion: Investing in orphans and supporting small businesses contributes to building stronger, more resilient communities. By addressing the needs of vulnerable children and bolstering local enterprises, we strengthen the social fabric, promote solidarity, and foster a sense of belonging and interconnectedness among community members.
5. Long-term Sustainability: By providing assistance to orphans and small businesses, we lay the foundation for long-term sustainability and resilience. Empowering disadvantaged individuals and supporting grassroots initiatives helps create a more inclusive and equitable society, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to collective prosperity.
In summary, both orphans and small businesses, regardless of the race or ethnicity of their owners, require support to address vulnerabilities, promote economic empowerment, foster diversity and inclusion, strengthen communities, and ensure long-term sustainability. By extending a helping hand to those in need and investing in the growth and development of local enterprises, we can create a more prosperous and equitable world for all.

Schaffin , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a multidisciplinary individual with a background in biomedical science, choreography, dance, and photography, my journey reflects a diverse range of passions and experiences. After working as a scientist for three months, I embarked on a 15-year career as a professional dancer and choreographer, where I honed my skills in movement, expression, and storytelling through dance.
However, my trajectory took a poignant turn with the passing of my best friend, Japi, who was a photographer. His untimely death served as a catalyst for me to explore a new avenue of artistic expression and tribute. Inspired by his passion and talent, I transitioned into the realm of photography, seeking to honor his memory while also discovering my own creative voice behind the lens.
This transition not only allowed me to pay homage to Japi’s legacy but also provided me with a means to combine my scientific background with my artistic endeavors. Through photography, I found a unique outlet to blend my analytical skills with my creative vision, capturing moments that evoke emotion, tell stories, and provoke thought.
Furthermore, the decision to allocate 100% of the profits from my photography endeavors to Chisomo Shelters in Zambia holds deep personal significance. It represents a harmonious convergence of my diverse interests and a commitment to using my talents and resources to make a positive impact on the lives of others, particularly orphaned and underprivileged children.
In essence, my journey from biomedical science to dance and ultimately photography is a testament to the fluidity of passion and the power of art to inspire change. By embracing each chapter of my professional evolution, I strive to not only pursue my own artistic fulfillment but also to contribute meaningfully to the greater good, echoing the spirit and legacy of my dear friend, Japi.
I am deeply grateful and immensely proud of the individuals who have generously contributed to the success of Japi Culture through their donations, guidance, and unwavering support. Without their invaluable assistance, my co-founder Lameck, my wife Jade, and I would not have been able to navigate the challenges and triumphs of building our venture.
Their contributions extend far beyond financial assistance; they have provided us with invaluable advice, mentorship, and encouragement every step of the way. Their belief in our vision and dedication to our cause have been instrumental in propelling Japi Culture forward, allowing us to overcome obstacles and achieve milestones that once seemed out of reach.
Moreover, their commitment to our mission to support Chisomo Shelters in Zambia underscores the power of collective action and the profound impact that individuals can have when they come together for a common purpose. Their generosity has enabled us to fulfill our promise to allocate 100% of the profits from Japi Culture to Chisomo Shelters, providing crucial assistance to orphaned and underprivileged children in need.
As we reflect on our journey thus far, we are humbled by the generosity and kindness of those who have stood by us, offering their unwavering support and guidance. Their belief in our vision has not only helped us realize our goals but has also reaffirmed our faith in the inherent goodness and compassion of humanity.
In essence, the success of Japi Culture is a testament to the collective effort and collaboration of a community united by a shared commitment to making a positive impact in the world. To all those who have contributed to our journey, we extend our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation. Together, we have proven that by working hand in hand, we can create meaningful change and empower those in need to build brighter futures.

How’d you meet your business partner?
My journey with Lameck Goma began during our college years, a period marked by the peak of my dance career, filled with tours and performances that took me far and wide. Despite my busy schedule, I made it a point to attend classes whenever I was in town. It was during these moments that I first crossed paths with Lameck, a fellow student whose unwavering belief in my passion for dance left a lasting impression.
In the classroom, amidst lectures and assignments, Lameck became not just a classmate, but a confidant and mentor. His steadfast encouragement and belief in my potential served as a guiding light during times of uncertainty. He saw beyond the present moment, envisioning a future where my dedication and talent would yield even greater rewards.
Beyond his role as a supportive friend, Lameck possessed a remarkable talent for graphic design. He generously offered his skills to help bring my artistic vision to life, designing everything from promotional materials to merchandise with precision and creativity. Through our collaborative efforts, a strong bond formed, rooted in mutual respect and a shared commitment to our creative pursuits.
It was during this time of collaboration and camaraderie that the seeds of Japi Culture were sown. Inspired by the memory of our late friend, Edward Japi, whose passion for photography left an indelible mark on both of us, we embarked on a journey to honor his legacy and pursue our shared dreams. The name “Japi Culture” emerged as a tribute to Edward, a symbol of remembrance and reverence for his artistic spirit and vision.
Today, as co-founders of Japi Culture, Lameck and I stand united by our shared experiences, aspirations, and the profound bond forged through years of collaboration and friendship. Our venture serves not only as a testament to our individual talents but also as a celebration of the transformative power of creativity, friendship, and the enduring legacy of those who inspire us along the way.

Central to our mission is the notion of inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring that our assistance reaches everyone who requires it, irrespective of barriers or limitations. Whether it’s supporting marginalized communities, championing social causes, or providing aid to those affected by adversity, our brand endeavors to be a beacon of hope and solidarity in an often tumultuous world.
Moreover, our commitment to helping others extends beyond philanthropy; it permeates every interaction, every decision, and every endeavor we undertake.
