We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Scarlett Villagomez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Scarlett, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I did photography as a hobby through high school, but I never really took my camera off the “auto” setting. It wasn’t until 2020 when I found out I was pregnant that I decided I wanted to learn the ins & outs of my camera. Funny enough TikTok is actually what finally helped me understand my equipment! I love watching these quick 2-3 minute videos from other photographers where they would get straight to the point, instead of trying to pay attention to a 40 minute video on Youtube.
I wish I had this same drive & determination in 2012, I can’t imagine where my business would be today!
As a photographer I think one of the most important things you can do is learn about the exposure triangle. This will help you a lot!
I gave up photography after high school because my camera was stolen. When I finally saved up to buy a new one I think I was just scared to start over with my business so for a few years I didn’t take myself or my business seriously.
Scarlett, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Scarlett & I’m a local wedding photographer!! At first I was only doing mini sessions, but after shooting an elopement I fell in love with documenting love stories & decided to make weddings & elopements my niche. I like to work with my clients every step of the way to make sure they have the best experience! I’m so proud of the amount of growth I’ve shown these past couple of years. I started my business towards the end of the pandemic, so it was definitely scary, but through the support of friends & family my business started growing through word of mouth. I want all my past clients, & future clients to know that I’m eternally grateful for each & every one of them! Without them I wouldn’t be able to live my dream!
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew about photography groups! There is such a big community of photographers that are willing to work with you & help you. I also wish I tried to learn Lightroom & Photoshop a lot sooner.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to be able to become a full time photographer, which I will hopefully be able to make that happen in a year or two! My long term goal would be for my daughter to join me so we could become a photography team, but that would be up to her!
