We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Scarlett Li. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Scarlett below.
Hi Scarlett, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
My industry’s biggest challenge to profitability lies in the misalignment between market preferences for certain artistic styles or formats and my own creative vision as a creator. This disconnect can lead to both financial struggles and internal mental conflicts.
For example, as an artist, I often strive to create deeply personal, innovative, or unconventional work. However, the market may favour trends that are more commercial or immediately accessible, such as popular aesthetics or familiar formats. Catering entirely to market demands could compromise my artistic integrity while sticking solely to my creative ideals might result in limited sales or audience engagement.
A specific story comes to mind: I once worked on a series of wearable pieces that were conceptually challenging and experimental and talked about ‘imaginary friends’ in psychology and sociology. While they resonated deeply with a niche audience, they didn’t perform well commercially because they didn’t align with broader market trends at the time. Meanwhile, another project, which was more in line with current aesthetic trends, sold much better but felt less fulfilling to me creatively. This constant balancing act between creating art that resonates with my inner vision and art that resonates with the market highlights the tension that many creators face.
Ultimately, the challenge isn’t just financial—it’s about navigating the emotional and professional struggle of balancing artistic authenticity with market demands. This is a dilemma that many creators face, and finding sustainable solutions often requires creativity, resilience, and strategic thinking.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
From a young age, I’ve been captivated by the beauty of sparkling, intricate objects. This passion led me to pursue a degree in Material Art and Design (MAAD) at OCAD University, where I delved into the study of materials and wearable art. After graduating, I set out on a journey to find the perfect balance between art and commerce, combining my creative vision with practical craftsmanship to create meaningful pieces.
My work spans several key areas:
Custom Engagement Rings: I help couples create one-of-a-kind engagement rings that reflect their unique love stories.
Jewelry Restoration: I specialize in restoring sentimental and meaningful jewelry pieces, breathing new life into items that carry emotional significance for their owners.
Personalized Jewelry: I design and craft bespoke jewelry that aligns with my client’s individuality and vision.
Artistic Exploration: Alongside my client-based work, I continue to research and explore new creative directions to push the boundaries of my craft.
What Sets Me Apart
What distinguishes me from others in this field is my commitment to exceptional service and professionalism. For clients seeking jewelry restoration or custom designs, I dedicate myself to understanding their needs and providing tailored design solutions that bring their ideas to life. My goal is not just to create beautiful jewelry but to transform my clients’ dreams into tangible, wearable art.
From a branding perspective, I aim to infuse my creations with a strong sense of Eastern aesthetics, weaving cultural and material storytelling into each piece. My designs are not only visually captivating but also resonate with a deeper narrative, offering a meaningful connection to those who wear them.
What I’m Most Proud Of
I take immense pride in the trust my clients place in me to handle their most precious pieces—whether it’s creating a symbol of love for a lifetime commitment or restoring a family heirloom with generations of history. Each project is a collaboration, and nothing is more rewarding than seeing the joy and satisfaction on my clients’ faces when they receive a piece that exceeds their expectations.

My work is about more than just jewelry—it’s about storytelling, craftsmanship, and preserving the emotional and cultural significance of each piece. Whether you’re looking for a custom design, jewelry restoration, or simply a unique creation, my mission is to deliver not just a product but an experience that celebrates artistry and individuality.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about me and my work. I look forward to creating something meaningful with you!

Whether it’s restoring a sentimental heirloom or designing a bespoke piece, I focus on understanding the story behind the request, which helps build trust and loyalty. This approach is complemented by my ability to balance artistic expression with practicality, creating pieces that are not only beautiful but also meaningful and functional for everyday wear.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
In the beginning, I concentrated on creating visually appealing posts that highlighted the uniqueness of my craft—custom jewelry pieces, intricate restoration projects, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of my design process. This authenticity attracted an initial group of followers who appreciated the personal touch and craftsmanship in my work.
Engaging storytelling became a crucial part of my content strategy. For example, when sharing a photo of a custom engagement ring, I included the story behind its creation—what inspired the design, how it represented the client’s love story, and the challenges overcome during the process. These narratives not only showcased my skills but also connected with people on an emotional level, encouraging them to like, share, and comment on my posts.
Consistency played a significant role as well. I developed a posting schedule to ensure regular content, which helped keep my audience engaged. Over time, I expanded my content types, incorporating videos, reels, and live sessions to give followers a more dynamic experience. Collaborating with influencers and tagging clients in posts also helped increase my reach.
To build your social media presence, focus on authenticity and consistency. Share content that reflects your passion, resonates with your audience, and is visually appealing. Engage meaningfully by responding to comments, asking questions, and using interactive features like stories and live sessions. Stay updated on trends and adapt them to your brand, while considering collaborations that align with your values. Most importantly, be patient—growth takes time, but by focusing on genuine connections and valuable content, you’ll cultivate a loyal and supportive audience.
