We recently connected with Saxl Rose and have shared our conversation below.
Saxl, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I think one of the best parts about my job is that I almost exclusively work on projects that are meaningful to me. A lot of my opportunities have came from marketing myself on social media through creative covers on my saxophone. I’ve really only been covering artists and bands that I genuinely love. And the majority of those artists & bands, I’ve had the opportunity to work with, whether live or in the studio. Each one is unique and special to me its own way. For instance, my favorite music artist of all time is Wiz Khalifa and I’ve had the honor of recording on several of his albums and being a featured artists on several of his releases in the past couple years.
I also got to play with one of my all time favorite bands, Paramore, after a heavily-backed social media campaign that I created.
More recently, I was featured on a new song by a long time favorite band of mine, Motionless in White.
So I’ve had a lot of these really cool, full circle moments where a band or artist that I’m a huge fan of have reached out to me to work on music and each one has been an incredible experience.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been playing music my entire life. A lot of people in my family are musical as well, my dad and my godfather were huge influences on my decision to pursue music full time.
In 2017 I started covering bands and artists that I liked on social media and things just started taking off really quickly.
Within a few months of me creating videos on social media, I had several gear endorsements like saxophones, my own custom mouthpiece etc. I had started traveling and getting flown out to perform/record with different bands and artists. I was even able to fly out to the UK to do an arena tour with a band I was touring with at the time, Neck Deep.
And I essentially just rinsed and repeated the process and started forming my own fan base through all of these different avenues. Since then I’ve just been collaborating with as many different artists and bands as possible such as: Wiz Khalifa, Jelly Roll, Paramore, Chris Brown, Bobby V, The Used, and a list of other incredible artists.
I’m really happy with the fact that I saw results from an idea that started in my head, and that I was able to execute it well enough to where it provided me with all of these opportunities.
But it’s definitely taken a lot of focus, a massive amount of sacrifice, a lot of years not seeing a huge financial return on my investment, and times of uncertainty. But luckily, I was blessed to have the full support of my family to where I could really commit to my craft.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’ve been playing the saxophone since a very young age. Essentially, I took something that I was already comfortable with, and developed an idea to bring more of a modern sound & look to a traditional jazz instrument. The vehicle of this idea being social media. And the unique part was that this was would music many people would recognize and maybe not think would make sense to typically be played on the saxophone.
All of this combined with consistent video drops was really the essence of how Saxl Rose even started in the first place.
My best advice to anyone is to find something you’re already good at and comfortable with. Something you have experience with. And use that to your advantage. Something that makes you unique or makes you stand out. It doesn’t have to be reinventing the wheel. But as long as it’s something that you love and that you can present to people in a unique way, people will pay attention.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I think an overlooked resource is listening. Networking in general is a highly utilized skill in pretty much any industry. But I think sometimes people overlook the skill of just listening to people talk. People who may have experiences in a field that you’re currently working in. Listen to their successes, their mistakes, their ideas, the things they picked up a long the way. These tidbits can really help you make your own decisions.
There’s a saying I live by which is, smart people learn from their own mistakes, wise people learn from the mistakes of others.
