We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sawyer Brice a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sawyer, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I recently wrapped up a year-long documentary project entitled, ‘Pilot’- A Jarrah Webster Story. The film is an experimental observation of the contemporary evolution of fashion designer Raja Babu and his brand; Jarrah Webster. The lens follows Raja as he navigates the pressures of graduating college and finding his identity, both artistically and individually. The documentary introduces his inner circle, with each person offering heartfelt testimonials on his profound influence within the local scene. It showcases the promising talent of a young designer poised to make an impact on the fashion industry. Experience Jarrah Webster’s artistic finesse as he unites functionality with aesthetics, meticulously crafting unique pieces that serve a purpose. ‘Pilot’ was shot on available 16mm, Super 8mm, Mini DV, Hi-8, and various digital mediums. The result is a guerrilla-style glimpse into the intersection of art, fashion, and self-discovery.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started making videos and pictures when I was a young boy, and haven’t stopped. I now am mainly a film director, focusing mainly on commercial, documentary, and narrative works. I also shoot photographs for personal work.
Recently, I started a production company with two friends, Charlie Flatten and Kiera Robinson called Overbite Studios. We mainly specialize in the worlds of music, fashion, and documentary works.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Go to galleries, go to premieres, share work, buy art, offer supportive words, etc.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Grants and the opportunities they can bring!
