We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Savy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Savy below.
Alright, Savy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
AI has been on the rise across the world wide web. While many use the software for day to day organization and simple google searches, AI has had a unique impact on the creative industry. I often have encounters with non-creatives and those from other industries who ask me “Are you afraid of being replaced by AI?”. Simply put, no. At this point AI is nowhere near sophisticated enough to come close to replicating human creativity on it’s own.
I cannot deny the usefulness of this innovative software as a powerful tool, but AI is not replacing any artists any time soon. The way I view AI is as a tool for digital artists and creators. Just as a painter has their brushes, oils, and canvas – a digital creator has Adobe, DaVinci Resolve, and AI.
While I myself am less inclined to use AI in my own creative works, I have seen some amazing new creations and visions with the help of AI. Videos of imagined landscapes, incredible deepfakes of celebrities, and even useful renderings. Ultimately there is still an Artist / Creator telling the AI program what to do.
I don’t think the AI ‘trend’ is going away anytime soon. However, I do think it will evolve. As the software evolves I hope that as a creative industry we can evolve with AI and use it to bolster our creativity.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I generally describe myself as a creative. I obtained my Bachelor of Fine Arts with and Emphasis in Graphic Design from Utah State University. While my official job title is Graphic Designer, I wear many hats. In the past few years I have had opportunities to Art Direct clients digital campaigns, photo shoots, and video / commercial shoots. Additionally in my free time I enjoy photography and fiction writing.
Most of my life I have had some form of creative outlet. When it came time for me to pursue higher education, I ultimately decided to pursue a creative career. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted my future job to look like and the endless possibilities of a creative centered career appealed to me.
I decided to refine my skills as a graphic designer. To be completely honest it was a challenging experience. I did not have near as many years of artistic experience as my cohort and peers in the design program, but I had determination and an eye for aesthetics.
Currently I work as a graphic designer at a local marketing agency. I work on a variety of projects including but not limited to: web design, digital design, print design, and brand identity design. Additionally, as mentioned above, I have had opportunities to direct photo and video shoots for web and commercial work in addition to campaigns. Unexpectedly, I have also tried my hand at content creation, specifically social media content. Social media is a massive industry that is especially useful for marketing and creatives.
I offer freelance services for digital and print needs as well as brand identity design. Additionally I have recently started social media consulting. When I work with my clients, not only do I make sure their requests and needs are met, I always keep in mind the ‘how’. How is the deliverable going to function in it’s space, how can the service I have provided expand my clients reach, ability, goal, etc. I strive to marry larger picture intent with small exquisite details.
Building relationships and fostering connections is a large part of my creative practice. I work with my clients with the mindset of a partnership. My role is to use my skills and expertise to help my clients reach their goals. As an avid people person I love getting to know people and building a community around creativity.
I am incredibly proud of how much I have learned thus far and I am excited to continue learning, growing, and improving. I love being able to use my creativity in other aspects of my life as well. Being a creative isn’t just my career / job, it’s how I live my life. I bring a uniqueness to all aspects of my life.
Personally, I am draw to print projects like publications and magazines. I love to let type and image come together to create beautiful compositions on the page. I am drawn to elevated, high end, luxury design and imagery. I find myself lost in fashion and design magazines,
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being able to see my work in the real world is incredibly satisfying and rewarding. I love being able to go out in my town and see my work displayed. More than just seeing my work around, I am fulfilled knowing that I created something purposeful and useful.
I stare at my work for hours on my desktop / computer screen. Nothing feels better than watching your creation come alive function as intended,
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
As generic as it may sound, my goal / mission is to create beautiful things. I think life should be beautiful and aesthetic. As a creative I take that task into my own hands. I am a visual person and in a world that is highly visual, I want to be intentional about making the content, communications, art that we interact with meaningful as well as pleasing.
