We recently connected with Savraj Banga and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Savraj, thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Being an Artist is not an easy job, for sure. It’s not a straight path from A to B, but it’s a roller coaster ride from A to Z. There’s a different feeling being an artist, being able to explore your thoughts, your vision through filmmaking which is form of art that is just 100 years old. The opportunity to engage in artistic expression across various mediums brings me immense satisfaction and a deep sense of fulfillment. The ability to communicate ideas, emotions, and narratives through my creative work is a privilege I cherish.
Occasionally, I have pondered what it would entail to pursue a full-time job. The notion of a traditional career path, with its accompanying stability and security, has its allure. The prospect of financial stability and the comfort of a predictable routine are aspects that intrigue me. However, I recognize that my primary allegiance lies with the realm of creativity. The freedom and flexibility inherent in being an artist enable me to explore the depths of my imagination and channel my unique perspectives into tangible creations. This autonomy empowers me to contribute to the world in a distinctive manner that resonates with both myself and those who engage with my art.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Of course. Let me introduce myself. I am Savraj Banga, a Filmmaker & Narrative Editor based out of Los Angeles. I was born in Bombay, the city of dreams as everyone calls it. I currently work as a Freelance Editor specializing in narrative based storytelling. As an editor based in Los Angeles, I am deeply passionate about the art of storytelling and the power of visual communication. My journey into the industry began with a strong affinity for literature and a fascination with the intricate process of crafting narratives. I honed my skills through formal education. With a master’s degree in Film and Media Production from the prestigious New York Film Academy, I have undergone rigorous training and immersed myself in the art and techniques of editing. This educational foundation has empowered me with a comprehensive understanding of storytelling and visual communication, allowing me to elevate projects to unparalleled heights.
Furthermore, I have had the privilege of honing my skills through an internship with a PGA member in Hollywood. This invaluable experience provided me with firsthand exposure to the inner workings of the entertainment industry, enabling me to witness the highest standards of professionalism and innovation. Collaborating with seasoned professionals and being immersed in the heart of the industry has enriched my understanding of the art of editing and shaped me into the accomplished editor I am today.
I am proud to have received an assisting editor mentorship at the Handy Foundation, where I had the opportunity to learn from industry veterans and refine my editing techniques. Today, I offer a range of professional services including film editing, video post-production, and content editing for various mediums. With a meticulous attention to detail, a keen understanding of pacing, and a knack for capturing the essence of a story, I strive to elevate the creative vision of my clients. I take pride in my ability to transform raw footage or written material into captivating and impactful works that resonate with audiences. What sets me apart is my commitment to collaboration, ensuring that the unique voice and message of each project shine through.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative lies in the ability to connect with others on a deep and emotional level. Art is a very beautiful medium of expression.Through my art, I have the privilege of evoking powerful emotions, sparking conversations, and resonating with the experiences and perspectives of those who engage with my work. Reading a script on paper and later down the line watching it on the big screen, is an extraordinary feeling that I feel the filmmakers strive for. There is no better feeling than seeing your work appreciated by your friends & Family. There is a profound sense of fulfillment in knowing that my creativity has the potential to inspire, uplift, and provoke thought in others. Witnessing the impact that my art can have on individuals, whether it’s bringing joy, offering solace, or prompting introspection, is truly gratifying. The opportunity to contribute something meaningful to the world through my artistic expression is what fuels my passion and makes the journey as an artist or creative incredibly rewarding.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The best way you can support artists is by supoorting your friends. It doesn’t have to be a financial support. Support your friends by sharing their work, showing it your friends. Building a strong network of support is vital for artists’ growth and success. Building a community can facilitate connections by organizing events, exhibitions, and workshops where artists can engage with one another, exchange ideas, and collaborate. Encouraging cross-disciplinary collaborations and partnerships between artists and other industries can also foster innovation and new artistic possibilities.
When it comes on a larger scale, society should acknowledge the significant role that art and creativity play in shaping culture, fostering innovation, and promoting emotional well-being. Encouraging representation across various backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives enriches artistic expression and allows for a more comprehensive reflection of the human experience. Providing equal opportunities for artists from marginalized communities and amplifying their voices helps to create a more equitable and vibrant creative ecosystem.
