Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Savasia Vida. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Savasia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I say it with pride that I’m a self-taught creator in all of my endeavors. I do of course appreciate what schooling and formal training has to offer, I honestly did not have the patience to learn in the more traditional way. I learned my skills from graphic to fashion design through YouTube! Such a highly recommended source for any creative—there is no shame in taking advantage of this source for your own journey. Learning the basics of sewing, graphic design, and pattern-making have been the most essential skills I’ve learned on my own. If I could re-do this journey to speed up the process though, I’d probably be more aware of any low-cost/free courses to do in the meantime either online or in-person. There are some techniques that I’d love to learn more about that would require the hands-on help of a seasoned professional, but there’s also nothing wrong with a little trial-and-error until you figure it out. I tend to learn better through trial-and-error anyway.
Savasia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Savasia, but most people know me as Sav! I’m an all-around creative from the Bay Area living in Los Angeles for about 6 years now. Since 2015, I’ve been the creative director and designer of WORTHYOPP. (pronounced as: worthy – opp) which is a unisex, streetwear brand all about owning your worth to overcome anything. We highlight individuality, inclusivity and mental health awareness with our pieces all while promoting messages to remind anyone of their inner strength. I started this brand with the intent to create a meaningful and empowering impact through art and clothing; I also express these concepts with my work in 2D animation, graphic design and comedic skits on my personal page: @savagelife.tv.
I had some amazing opportunities to showcase in Fashion Week from Los Angeles, New York to London all throughout 2023. Forever grateful for these experiences as it taught me so much more about networking in the industry. This year so far has been a much needed break from being in constant production, but I plan on returning to the global stages in 2025 with more improved, innovative pieces. We’ll also be launching handmade custom ordering by the end of this year so feel free to stay tuned through our website: worthyopp.com!
With this brand and my overall mission in life, I just hope to inspire anyone that they are always worthy of the life they want. Everyone is born worthy, but sometimes life can make it hard to remember that feeling we’re all entitled to. Through this outlet, I’m just here to remind you of who you really are.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Just keep holding that space and understanding that art is a never ending cycle with such a wide and diverse range of styles. It’s always building and changing, so stay open-minded. Respect the creative output of any individual—you don’t have to agree or like everything in this ecosystem but you can at least respect that every expression is unique in their own way. Art and creativity can heal, inspire, challenge and even ruffle feathers. But having this awareness and overall acceptance is key as it promotes freedom and individuality which I think are most important in a thriving creative ecosystem.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being able to express my authentic self through art has been the most rewarding. I don’t stress too much about the sales or the likes on social media because being able to creatively express what I feel deeply is priceless to me. I’ve also fallen in love with the whole creative process—I used to be so impatient because I wanted to see the end result so bad but now I see each and every step of the process as a sacred experience. From sketching an idea to drafting with the materials to then seeing it come to life is such a magical thing that I’ll never take for granted. Plus, seeing others wear and style my pieces however they want will always make me overly excited; that feeling alone is equally rewarding and serves as a reminder that I’m truly living in my purpose.
