We recently connected with Savannah Sweeting and have shared our conversation below.
Savannah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us a bit about who your hero is and the influence they’ve had on you?
My hero is and always will be my father. My father’s love language was food and he had this ability to bring people from all walks of life together with his cooking. One of my fondest memories from growing up is how my father used to invite people in the community to have Thanksgiving with our family. Then after the meal, we would make plates to deliver to older people who were alone, the homeless, and first responders working during the holiday.
When I started my business it was important to me to utilize my father’s recipes and continue honoring his legacy. Something Sweet is also named after my father because even after eating a hearty meal he would say, “now I just need something sweet and I’ll be full.”
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always enjoyed baking however I never thought I could pursue it as a career. I was working in the medical field during the pandemic when my friends encouraged me to follow my passions. I started videoing my work and giving out different desserts for feedback. Eventually, Something Sweet was born and I hit the ground running.
Something Sweet is all about taking traditional Southern desserts, flavors, etc, and turning them into a new exciting dessert. For example, one of my most popular desserts is a Peach Cobbler Pound Cake. I am always looking to take those classic flavors we know/love and provide a delicious new take on the dessert. I provide a variety of desserts from pound cakes, tipsy cupcakes, custom treat boxes, etc.
To speak for myself, and my business I want others to know that providing a good experience from start to finish is important to me. People trust me to bake things for all types of special occasions and that’s a huge deal, so I take customer service seriously. Also, I find it important to be able to receive feedback and constructive criticism.
Lastly, I’d like to acknowledge that I am very thankful/proud to those who’ve been so supportive of this journey so far. I’ve been lucky to have supportive friends, family, and customers.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Fostering client loyalty starts from the moment a customer makes an inquiry. I find it important to make sure the customer has a good experience from start to finish. If the customer is happy with the product chances are more than likely they will utilize your service again. Also, if they like the product they are more likely to refer you to their friends and family as well.
Allow them to ask questions, be helpful, and most importantly communicate! Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback and when you receive it, implement that feedback as well.
When boxing my cakes, I always include a thank you sticker with ways to stay connected with myself and my business. Another thing I do is offer discounts when I receive referrals. For example, when a customer comes to me and says so and so referred me I reach out and express gratitude to them for doing so. I will also then offer them a discount on their next order.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I will always say that my loyal clients have been the best source of gaining new clients. Word of mouth is such an important component of a successful business. I’ve been very fortunate to have clients who had positive experiences with me and then went on to refer me to their friends and family.
For example, I once sold a pound cake to a salesman at a car dealership. He shared the cake with others at the dealership and encouraged them to purchase from me. Within the next few days, I received several orders from those people as well.
It just goes to show the power of word of mouth and creating personable relationships with your clients.
