We were lucky to catch up with Savannah Steward recently and have shared our conversation below.
Savannah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s talk about innovation. What’s the most innovative thing you’ve done in your career?
After narrowing down my niche to canine photography, I am showcasing the athleticism of the canine by integrating powder pictures into my repertoire. These photographs are of dogs leaping in the air with colorful bursts of powder on their back with a black background. This has turned the photographs I capture into not only action-filled photos but pieces of artwork.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My love for photography began at a young age and developed into starting my business while in high school. At first, like most beginner photographers, I started to photograph friends, family, and even my dogs. I started volunteering for a therapy dog organization and later became the official photographer of the organization. This is not only where my business began to grow but I also discovered my niche, canine photography. I wanted my business to be unique in this industry, so in 2020, I started photographing dog sports. This led to photographing many dog sports competitions including North America Dock Diving Dogs championships, UP200 dog sledding races, and heelwork freestyle competitions. I was pleased to have my photographs published twice in the AKC Family Dog magazine (June/July 2021 and July /August 2023). After having the privilege to photograph dogs in competitions, I wanted to create an artistic spin on their abilities, so I created Pawfect Powder Palooza. This is a large, all-day event held at dog sports facilities where I photograph dogs of all breeds showcasing their athletic ability with colorful powder. Another artistic way to showcase a dog’s uniqueness is with my canine imagery sessions. This session is used to highlight the dog’s personality and the bond with its owner. I am excited to see where this amazing business will take me.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I believe non-creatives don’t understand that photography requires more than just a click of the camera. Planning the shot and setting the scene is necessary to capture the subject correctly. It does take a creative eye and a skill at editing as well as confidence in your own artistic style. With the help of social media, I have shared behind-the-scenes and the photography process to help non-creatives understand what goes into my business.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My overall mission is being able to showcase the canine, not just as a dog, but as a loved companion.
