We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Savannah Schultz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Savannah below.
Hi Savannah , thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the decision of whether to donate a percentage of sales to an organization or cause – we’d love to hear the backstory of how you thought through this.
On June 24th, 2022 Women around the nation took a large step back into the past, Roe V. Wade was overturned. As an artist surrounded by other artists we all jumped into action. We first put out a call for donations to make protest signs with the remaining funds to go towards AFO (Abortion Funds Ohio). During our first call to action we were able to paint over 600 protest signs and donate $2,413.65. Jousha Hedlund from Ojai, CA donated a design for us to use for print. Our local print shop Franklinton Press was able to print shirts & posters in record time for us. One hundred percent of those sales went to AFO (Abortion Fund Ohio), our donation from sales was $6,109.14. All in all we were able to donate over $8,000! We still offer those tees & prints, with 100% profits donated to AFO, we have very low stock. A very heartfelt thank you to everyone who was able to contribute and continues to contribute. We won’t go back.

Savannah , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
If you aren’t familiar with Good Girl Silver you might want to be after this! My name is Savannah and I am the maker behind the brand. I got into metalsmithing after being a Corp trucker for 4.5 years. I used to tour around the country with a pop up shop and ran into my jewelry collecting addiction. Like a lot of small business owners now Good Girl started in the Covid times. The pop up shop wasn’t really poppin’ with quarantine restrictions. I knew I wanted to do something creative and work for myself, so I learned how to make jewelry – and not just for myself. I pride myself on having a style that might not be for everyone. I love to use unique stones, stones with a story to tell. I’m not your turquoise toting girl, I go for a lot of red, orange, black and deep tone stones. I even use vintage pool balls to make jewelry. The rock and roll meets the emo that was never a phase. So, if this sounds like you we should definitely be friends.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first started making jewelry I really thought I was a boho girl, I even had a different business name. I kept the persona going for about a year before I realized it really wasn’t me. I know I talked previously about my brand and who I am but it wasn’t that easy to know my style. Sounds so silly when you say it. I saw a lot of people on IG who were absolutely crushing it and making great jewelry, I thought that is what I needed to do to be successful. Let me tell you how wrong I was. When I pulled myself back to reality and remembered that it was never a phase, I changed everything. I got rid of the turquoise, ditched the boho name and became Good Girl. I started finding the stones that actually meant something to me and my creativity and starting making waves. I could finally see a future with my brand and my art. You don’t have to be someone else to be successful or creative, you just have to take a good hard look in the mirror and find yourself. I haven’t looked back since.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I wouldn’t say that I have a large following by any means, I am still growing. When I first started I was totally speaking into the void. It can be an extremely scary and vulnerable place. You don’t have a true audience yet and it seems kinda pointless but keep going. Keep talking into the void and find your people. Again stay true to who you are and like minded people will follow. Stick to a flow or an aesthetic, when someone views your profile it should be clear what your intentions are or what you are providing. I tend to stick to a color scheme so it doesn’t look too chaotic. You want quality images but you don’t need a fancy camera for everything, all of my photos and videos are taken with my iPhone 14. Make a schedule for yourself, the algorithm is half the battle. Time out your posting schedule with something the best suits your view and activity times. Three things to go by quality, aesthetic and routine.
