Savannah, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
I think many people nowadays prefer cheap art or prints as opposed to hand drawn or painted artworks. I think places like Amazon that whole sale cheap artworks definitely have made an impact on small artists.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been drawing my whole life. I found out about halfway through college that I wanted to do commission work rather than art education, and found myself drawing dogs with colored pencils for fun. My business quickly (and accidentally) took off, and I started drawing dogs for friends and family. As my social media grew, I because a full time pet portrait artist, drawing sentimental portraits of my customer’s furry loved ones. I started dabbling in wildlife art to experiment with different mediums, and have recently found a huge passion for drawing endangered species with pastel pencils, and hope to start my own collection soon.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients has hands down been word of mouth. My customers have been so supportive and when they receive their portraits, they tend to share pictures on social media or tell their friends and family about my work, which often leads to more business!
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
The biggest things I needed to fund my business were professional grade materials, such as high quality paper and light fast colored pencils, and my website. Buying my domain was a large upfront cost, but was hands down the most important tool of my business. All of my traffic goes through my website, so it was of utmost importance to make sure it was professional and had all of my information. Eventually I invest in a bigger working space and nicer lighting, but those things can always come later!
