Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Savannah Kizachatéra. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Savannah, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Thank you for having me. In college, I considered myself a jack of all trades and wasn’t sure how to take my passion and make a profitable business out of it. After graduation from UH, I realized I wasn’t cut out for a 9-5 and I wanted a career with sustainable, long-term fulfillment. I had many “regular jobs” along the way; I worked as a Kroger cashier at 15, selling perfume/skin care at Nordstroms at 16, as a personal assistant to two CEOS at 20, doing promotions for wine/liquor companies at 21, as a nanny at 27 and eventually taking a more intense position with JVIC, working nights in chemical plants. When I was laid off due to covid for the 2nd time, I decided to take the risk of organizing my own events and start working full-time in the dance industry. This was problematic as I started at the beginning of the pandemic when social interaction was frowned upon, and our industry was pretty much shut down. However, slowly over time I created a brand and business model that has given me the flexibility and independence in my career that I always wanted. I am constantly meeting new people and mentoring them on their own journey of personal growth. Seeing how dance can dramatically improve the lives of such a diverse group of people gives me certainty that I made the right choice transitioning into my field full-time. So yes, very happy working as a creative professional.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In short, I teach people how to social dance. I specialize in partnered dances such as: Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, Kizomba and work with individuals of all ages and experience levels.
We do private lessons, group classes/demos (at weddings, engagement and graduation parties) and perform at congresses/festivals around the country. In addition, we provide “dance therapy” to those in senior/retirement homes and hospitals as a wonderful distraction/way to connect with others.
I started dancing socially/taking classes at other studios in 2013 and I believe what sets me apart is my own personal struggle. I started as a complete beginner without any mentors learning the ropes in a male dominated field through trial and error. In turn, I do not take my friendships or relationships with clients for granted. Currently, I am working towards developing a trustworthy, professional team that will aid and support the growth of the company by organizing more consistent, quality events.
