We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Savannah Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Savannah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Are you ever really successful? That’s the question I constantly ask myself. Like at what point have I been deemed “successful”? I feel like being successful as an entrepreneur is grinding when no one is watching, constantly figuring out new ways to grow and be better at your craft and never getting complacent and recognizing when it is time to pivot or shift priorities. It’s that mentality of getting back up when you fall down. To me, everyday that my business is running and I book another client that wants to work with me, that is a success. It’s the culmination of little wins that add up to the big “success”.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Savannah and I am a portrait and wedding photographer based in Palm Beach. I originally started photography as a side, fun little gig working with my friend and then realized I was really good at it and I didn’t want to put my camera down. I went from creating a side hustle and capturing family and friends to eventually growing and growing to being able to quit my day job and do this full time.
Weddings are the bread and butter of my business and my passion, but I also love connecting with my clients past their wedding and being able to be a part of all of their big life events afterwards, as well. From their pregnancy announcement to the birth of their first child, to capturing their family with sandy toes on the beach. It’s truly amazing.
I think what sets me apart is my client experience. I work with my clients to figure out the best location for their shoot, help brides with insight on venues or other vendor recommendations or even down to cleaning her dress on the day of when she steps in a dirt pile. My clients know that when they book me, I have their back and I go the extra mile to ensure they get the photos of their dreams. It all starts with connecting on the initial phone call, all the way through the final gallery delivery and creating beautiful tangible keepsakes like an album to display their images for a lifetime.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Starting out in a business is hard and it is scary. You have to invest in yourself before anyone else will. When I first started, I used my savings to buy my first camera and lens. From there, any money I made from shoots, I put right back into the business to buy hard drives, SD cards, more lenses, gallery storage, insurance etc. Slowly and slowly I was able to finally get to a place where I was able to keep and save my earnings rather than just investing it back into the business. It’s a journey. Photography is expensive.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I’d say my positive, bubbly attitude, my attentiveness towards my clients, my quick response time, how comfortable I made them feel in front of my camera and my quality of work. I strive to create an overall great experience for my clients every step of the way and when you do that enough times, you gain trust and repeat clients who then tell their friends about you and it snowballs from there. You have to make every client feel like they’re your only client. Give them to white glove treatment and it goes a long way.
