Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Savannah Cano. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Savannah, thanks for joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I have been able to earn a full-time living by doing makeup and nails. In the beginning it was very hard trying to build my clientele, learn customer service skills, learn how to price my services, learning about how to set policies in place. But at the end of the day I regret nothing, because of my mistakes I made as a young makeup artist & nail tech, I’m doing as well as I am now.
One thing that I am grateful I did was I stayed down and worked really hard, while everyone else my age were all focused on having fun. I was focused on building my clientele, elevating my business, professionalizing everything I do.
Savannah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Savannah, you can find my makeup & nail page on Instagram @BeatsByVannah. I am a makeup artist & nail tech. I got into to doing nails and makeup as a teenager. I did nails and makeup from my sophomore year up until I graduated. At a young age I knew that this is all I really wanted to do career wise.
After graduating high school I stopped doing nails for a while and just solely focused on becoming a legitimate makeup artist. It gave me a chance to perfect and focus on one thing.
I was only 17 at this time so I had to discipline myself in order to stay focused on my goal. I built my clientele, kept up with trends and what was in demand, networked with every female I met, did a lot of research on investing in a growing business and also attended a makeup school.
Once I started seeing real money from my makeup clients I started to professionalize everything I do. I set up a booking website, changed my prices as my work got better, started handing out business cards/flyers. I then started building my nail kit again and perfecting my nail skills and knowledge in private.
My clientele continued to grow and in January of 2022 I decided to start doing nails again. My work is constantly getting better and my clientele is consistently growing, now that I am taking both nail and makeup clients.
I am very proud of not just how well my business is doing now but how far I’ve come skill wise and professionally.
I hope to continue doing what I love and building my business up.
I am currently working on securing a space to open up the first Beats By Vannah Makeup & Nail studio.
I am excited for what the future holds.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being a makeup artist and nails tech is seeing how much my clients enjoy my skills and creativity. The look of shock and joy on their faces when they see their new makeup look or nail set is priceless.
To see other women enjoy and appreciate my work as much as I do is a rewarding feeling.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Being a teenager when I started the career path that I am on, I was always told to keep my secrets of success to myself. I was taught to always strive to be better than anyone else doing the same thing that I am doing. As I got older I found myself losing track of my personal goals and my own creativity because I was too busy paying attention to what other makeup artist and nail techs were doing.
I was too busy watching what they were doing so that I could do the same thing but try to do it better.
I then realized that it is okay to not be in competition with other people in the same Industry as you because your really setting yourself back without noticing.
When I started tapping into my own creativity and focusing on what my business goals were was when my business really started to elevate.
I stopped gate keeping my success tips because I realized that no matter what secrets I give, they will never produce the same work as I do. Nobody can be me except me. Everyone is different, in their own lane and that’s okay.
