Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Saul Gomez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Saul, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Stepping out of my comfort zone. I was about 19-20 at the time and was completely clueless of who I was and who I wanted to be. I had to find my passion. I was offered a job to work at a window tinting shop from a family member. I would have never thought that that was going to shift my perspective on everything. I instantly fell in love with it. Everything about it was so interesting to me. I have always loved working with my hands. Fast forward 2 years and I had gotten extremely good at it. Everything was going amazing! I felt my life was on track and I was ready make a career out of it. Then Covid-19 hit. We were let go due to the financial hardship the shop had taken. I was lost again, scared, and worried of where to even begin or what to do as no shops were hiring. I had to figure something out and I had to figure it out quick. I sat back and really thought everything through, and came to the conclusion of dropping everything and moving out of my hometown to pursue my dream of owning my own business. I moved about 100 miles away from home and went full pedal to the floor on this. I have had my ups and downs with running my own business, but 2 years later I am comfortable and staying steady with business operations. I feel if I never took the jump and leaving my hometown, I would be working a job I wouldn’t have liked and still feeling lost.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a 26 year old small business owner running a window tinting/residential & commercial window tinting/paint protection film shop completely solo. I have always been the type of person who has wanted to work for themself and take on the world of automotive accessories. I’ve always loved working with my hands and this industry is the perfect fit for me. This field of work is considered an art due to the required patience and precise installs and cuts. I’m a mobile or in city service that has built an awesome cliental list. I take extreme pride in my work and the relationships I build. I’m not just a “come by, get it done, get paid” service. I build a relationship with every single customer upon booking all the way through to the end of the job. I like to always check in to make sure the customer is still satisfied later on down the road. I’m most proud that I have been able to pursue this dream at a relaxing rate. Yes, I have had major low points throughout the journey but it has made a much stronger person mentally. It has taught me many ways to overcome just about any problem.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The relationships I’ve built along the way. I used to be an extremely shy kid back in the day and never really stepped out of my shell. I knew with starting this business that needed to change. I did develop better social skills as I’ve gotten older, but since starting this business I have grown into such a social, caring business owner. I truly get to know my customers to give them trust and let them know they are in good hands. I always make sure every customer is comfortable before fully committing to any desired jobs. You always want to build a good relationship with every customer to ensure they can always come back later on down the road if they ever want more work done confidently and comfortably.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I have always been extremely hard on myself. With starting this business, I always felt the need to think to myself, “am I even good at this?” or “why would anyone ever choose me?”. I had to learn to overcome that kind of mentally and instead think positively. Whenever I feel down and feel like my business isn’t “good enough”, I sit back and look back on how many relationships I’ve built and remind myself of all I’ve accomplished along the way.
