We were lucky to catch up with Sathya Callender Wilson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sathya, thanks for joining us today. Your ability to build a team is often a key determinant of your success as a business owner and so we’d love to get a conversation going with successful entrepreneurs like yourself around what your recruiting process was like -especially early on. How did you build your team?
Oh wow do I have a lot to share when it comes to hiring! When I first launched Scars of Survival Magazine it was just myself. I was one of many people who had issues with delegating. I felt no one could run my business or handle things like myself so bringing on a team was a challenge. Things became very challenging for me after awhile. I had to make the hard decision to start hiring individuals and I did. It didn’t take much, so many people wanted to journal and become apart of the magazine. They loved the mission and what the magazine stands for. Although I received so much love and support and had roughly 15 journalist ( I didn’t know any better), there was still challenges and I eventually sent letters of thank you so much for your time and efforts in journaling with us. Along that journey I’ve experienced everything journalist not meeting deadlines, at the last minute saying they can’t journal, dishonesty in saying they could journal and really can’t, and more. The lesson learned is: do a through background check, pay attention to personality, do a virtual or in person interview. whatever agreement you’re team signs make sure you stick to that and hold them accountable.

Sathya, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Absolutely! My name is Mrs. Sathya Callender- Wilson (I’m a newlywed)!! I’m the founder/CEO of Scars of Survival Magazine, Scars of Survival Inc, Scars of Survival Survivors Bootcamp, and Scars of Survival Survivors Guide. The entire movement was founded after I overcame a 9 year domestic violence relationship that seemed like forever. I wanted to help other survivors to do the same which is survive, heal, and thrive. Scars of Survival Magazine is a globally impacting publication that has cultivated a safe place for survivors to share their unique stories. I’m most proud of making history and continuously impacting lives and giving hope.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What helped build my reputation wasn’t a complicated task because most people gravitated to the publication because of relatable experiences (domestic violence). Domestic violence is what the publication is mainly focused around so that alone allows the publication become reputable. In addition to that I would say word of mouth, this definitely goes a long way. That one person can literally destroy your business or help it to grow so keep this in mind even when it comes to customer service.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I unfortunately didn’t have capital from business loans, gofund me or any of those resources. Up until this very moment the capital for my businesses have come from my own funding that was either saved or from being employed by another company. I would recommend if your not going to utilize other resources and you know your wanting to start your own business, start saving funds toward that goal. It’ll make things less stressful for you.
