We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sathya Callender. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sathya below.
Hi Sathya, thanks for joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
Where do I start?! Launching a publication was never something I even gave a little thought too. We can say it had to be God ordained and it surely was a vision from him. The only thing I knew about a magazine was getting jet in the mail. I was in the comfort of my home one afternoon and instantly began thinking as to why there was no publication catered to the domestic violence community. We needed a safe place to share our stories. I began doing research and learned there was no publication as such. I contacted a young lady I knew who had a magazine and ask her if she thought it was a great idea and if she didn’t mind helping me, I paid for her service. I was given the basics and had to learn as I went along. At that time it was just a magazine but it’s now a vital resource which I’ve grown into a company. I went above and beyond a EIN, business name, license and more to now have a company. Hard-work and dedication is what I applied amongst those things were all building business relationships and consistency.
Sathya, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Sathya Callender, born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. I’m a mother, wife, grandmother, author, domestic violence advocate, overcomer, CEO, non profit founder, philanthropist, and editor in chief. Domestic violence became my passion after surviving and overcoming a 9 year domestic violence relationship. Since I’ve launched Scars of Survival Magazine which is a globally impacting publication catered to the domestic violence community which has cultivated a safe place for survivors to share stories of inspiration and triumph. I’m most proud of the impact we’ve made in lives globally and our continued growth and I would like our supporters, readers and most importantly our survivors to know we truly appreciate the continued love and support, we accept your stories in love, respect, honor and integrity, with open arms. Know you have a safe place to share.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
We keep in touch with clients and potential clients by email, or phone call. People love the idea of being able to communicate with the CEO and I feel it helps build not only a bond but trust with our survivors so they can be comfortable sharing their story. I’ve heard the suggestion that I wouldn’t be reachable but with a publication like mine I feel it’s best I’m reachable. There’s been some regrets like getting calls late at night but I fixed that concern with hours and availability.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think what helped us build our reputation is one, word of mouth which goes far. Also being able to take those interviews and create a effective, life changing story for not only our survivors but readers. I myself do a lot of marketing as well and we do have a marketer on our team also who does an amazing job at getting the word out about Scars of Survival Magazine and building that report for partnerships and stories.
