We recently connected with Satang Danso and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Satang thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I will begin by saying, as a woman growing up, I read a lot of fashion magazines and often raided my sister’s closet to create different outfits. From a tender age in high school, I started creating clothes that I eventually wore myself and my classmates wanted me to get them the same outfit. At this point in time, I knew I wanted to make a career of it.
As a fashion lover following my dreams I established a business to create a look that is fascinated by life and amazed with the ability to build a brand and execute a vision. I have a strong sense of creativity to have unique designs of cloths that people want to buy and wear.
My journey of establishing a business and subsequently creating a brand for modest fashion started in 2013 Prior to that, my modest sense of style has inspired many and as a result I have always been consulted and complimented by many young women from my social media platforms, as well as, the people I deal with on a daily basis and in various events I attend.
Additionally, speaking from experience, I found it difficult to spot a particular brand or boutique/store , specifically dealing with modest clothing for women. ranging from scarfs, Abayas, etc. I have also realized that many ladies in my community had the same experience. As such, I deemed it necessary to venture into this type of business, coupled with my great passion for fashion. I knew this was only a gateway for me to do what I truly loved and I enjoy the experience of giving a new life.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
My name is Satang Danso. A lady from West Africa (The Gambia). I am a wife and mother of four beautiful children. I moved here to the United States ten years ago. I reside in Georgia. I am entrepreneur and currently have two businesses.
I’ve always been extremely passionate and the type of person who loves sharing information! When I first started my business I was working as a hair dresser which I absolutely loved but I still felt like something was missing. I wanted to help others by sharing the tricks I had learned and acknowledge all of the incredible talent /skills, in photography and modelling .
Modelling my own products gives me a joy .
I got into this industry with the intentions to build a legacy for my children and to make a difference in modest women clothing. Every entrepreneur intentions are to have a successful business that will have an impact In their society. When I had my second child in 2013 I was looking for a way to make extra incomes ,therefore, I started selling hand-made hijab scarves. I hand-maded ten scarves and within a week I was sold out Then I started looking to purchase wholesale because I had just given birth and did not have the time to navigate a newborn and a business. As I stated earlier, it was very difficult to fine the type of modest clothing I desired, especially with my Muslim style of womenswear.
2013 was the turning point for VOVELA’VIVA , as I worked together with my husband to create a website . I have a very unique collections under my brand which I later launch. VOVELA’VIVA experience in the modest industry has allowed me to expand the range to include other products – all of which have been instant best-sellers across.
As I begin to notice that my business was generating profit , I decided to add other accessories like jewelry and purses/bags.
I am very excited about the opportunity I was given for me to share my story During my previous interview with your magazine I expounded mainly hijabs (scarves) accessories I.e. jewelry and purses/bags. Because of this interview being published in your magazine I had growth in my clientele. This has inspired me to add some Abaya (over garments) and modest dresses.
VOVELA’VIVA.com became a place for people to feel beautiful and comfortable in there own way , It is the type of store that gears mainly toward modest womenswear for modest woman and we are here to showcase the clothing to empower women to feel good.about our brand.
I place my clients at the forefront of our business. I am not satisfied until YOU are satisfied! I rigorously learning, growing to ensure that VOVELA’VIVA is the most qualified for your modesty .
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
As a brand, I make it fun yet sophisticated, and i am always innovating . Any time i have a new collection I raise the bar and make sure that whatever I create will fill a gap in the industry. I want every product to serve a purpose; if there isn’t a need for new product or there is already an amazing product available, then i won’t create a new collection . I’m not motivated by money, so the bottom line doesn’t matter to me. It is about giving people the power to express what they want from my brand. no matter who they are, or where they are from. Beauty is not about how much you spend, but how confident you feel, so that will always be the ultimate goal for us.”
In the beginning of my business it was very slow in growth My first interview with Voyage ATL Magazine and the publishing of my business has created major growth. Also my tenacity, resilience and the support of my husband and family has encouraged me to keep pursuing my dream.
Always follow your dreams. Life is always what you make it. You may get knocked down but pull yourself up by your bootstraps. Obstacles will come but don’t stop and don’t give up.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media plays a very big role in my business, particularly, because I sell online. I am googleable. So, therefore, if you go on your search engine I.e. instagram, Facebook, twitter, tumbler, Pinterest, you will fine me The social media has connected me to great amount of clients I have today. The demographic that I am targeting is women ages 32 through 70 years of age. My favourite platforms are Facebook and Instagram. I make most of my sales through posting Facebook reels and photos.
I thank God for making it possible for me . And giving credit to my husband and my family for the love and support.
