Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sashya Thind . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Sashya thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
After working for several firms as an architectural designer, I decided it was time to start a family. At the time, creating a flexible work schedule wasn’t an option. I had also watched my mother and grandmother run their own studios all my life and was hoping to do so myself after gaining work experience. I enjoy the autonomy of having my own creative voice, creating my own schedule (creatives need to work outside of office hours- when inspiration strikes) and creating some semblance of work- life balance while doing something I love. I truly love the business side as well! Being able to pitch ideas and creating meaningful spaces for people to live with their families.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am an interior designer based outside of Boston. After studying architecture and working for several firms internationally and locally, I launched my studio in 2012. My philosophy is described as warm minimalism. I believe that it brings together my love for natural materials in spaces that feel calm and collected.
Interior design is really a process of solving problems beautifully. Every client and their needs are unique. This requires a lot of listening, collaborating and problem solving through the design and construction process. We are with them throughout the journey to ensure their goals are achieved. This requires coordinating with over a 100 vendors and professionals to bring to fruition successfully.
I believe my contemporary aesthetic and background in Architecture is what sets me apart in New England. I also enjoy working collaboratively with Architects and finding ways to seamlessly integrate our services to give the client a well thought out space. This early integration can anticipate and solve for issues before they impact the project schedule or budget.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I was unable to get a job pregnant or leave at 5:30pm to pick up my first child from daycare. I had 2 choices – to stay home or start my own firm. I wanted to continue working and bring creative. The early years my income was barely paying for the daycare 😅
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn being available to clients at all the time. When you start off, You do it as a biz owner to be responsive but then it seeps into your family time and vacations, leading to burn out. I had to create work hours and family time where I put my phone away or log off to spend quality time with my family. Having your own biz requires a lot of time outside 9-5 to accomplish business development, bookkeeping, hr related tasks.
