We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sasha Merci. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sasha below.
Sasha , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
As a stand-up comic, I’ve always found joy in co-founding *Morir Soñando*, a showcase dedicated to elevating Dominican voices and celebrating our unique perspectives in comedy. It’s been a powerful way to build a community and create space for Dominican comedians to shine. But recently, I’ve embarked on a journey that has transformed me in ways I never anticipated.
I’m currently starring in *LA Egotista*, a play written by Erlina Ortiz, and it has profoundly changed my life—not just as an entertainer, but as a human being, a sibling, and a soul constantly striving for better life. This project embodies everything I love about storytelling: it’s raw, it’s vulnerable, and it delves into the complex, intimate relationships we hold with our family members and ourselves. *LA Egotista* has pushed me to explore parts of myself I hadn’t yet tapped into, helping me better understand who I am beyond the stage.
The most meaningful projects are the ones that challenge us, that ask us to be more than we were yesterday. Working on *Morir Soñando* fills me with pride, as I see Dominican culture celebrated in all its vibrancy. And *LA Egotista* fills me with purpose, grounding me in the beauty of our shared humanity. Together, these projects remind me why I fell in love with performing and storytelling in the first place—to connect, to transform, and to inspire.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a stand-up comic, actor, and cultural advocate, and my journey into this world started with a deep love for storytelling and a desire to see more representation for my community. Growing up as a first-generation Dominican American, I found that humor was my way of navigating the complexities of identity, family, and cultural expectations. I always felt there was a lack of authentic Dominican voices in mainstream entertainment, so I set out to change that.
In 2019, I co-founded *Morir Soñando*, a stand-up comedy showcase dedicated to celebrating Dominican comedians and highlighting our unique voices. *Morir Soñando* isn’t just a comedy show; it’s a cultural experience. We bring audiences together to laugh, learn, and celebrate Dominican heritage through comedy. I believe what sets us apart is our commitment to authenticity. We share stories that resonate with our community and showcase the resilience, humor, and beauty of Dominican culture. I’m proud to have created a platform that not only entertains but also fosters community and representation.
In 2020, I expanded my reach through television by filming *Like, Share, Dimelo* with Darlene Demorizi, a show that explored topics relevant to the Latino community in a fresh, relatable way. Then, in 2023, I starred in the Lionsgate film *Righteous Thieves*, which was a significant milestone for me as an actor, allowing me to reach a wider audience and further hone my craft in a new medium.
Currently, I’m starring in *LA Egotista*, a powerful play written by Erlina Ortiz. This project has deeply impacted me by challenging me to explore themes of self-identity and family dynamics in ways I never had before. It’s a project that allows me to showcase a different side of my artistry and connect with audiences on an emotional level. I’m grateful to be part of a piece that resonates so deeply with my own experiences and that encourages reflection and growth.
While I’m still finding myself through my entrepreneurial ventures, I can honestly say the most fulfilling projects are the ones I’m working on today. Each one represents a step forward in my journey of self-discovery and staying true to my purpose. Above all, what I’m most proud of is my ability to stay true to myself and let go of things that do not serve me. Through each of these projects, whether in comedy, television, or film, I’ve learned the importance of authenticity and alignment. I want my fans and followers to know that my work is rooted in a love for my culture and a desire to bridge communities through laughter, storytelling, and shared experience.
In everything I do, I aim to uplift Dominican stories, amplify marginalized voices, and create art that inspires others to embrace their identities. My hope is that audiences leave my performances feeling seen, understood, and inspired to celebrate their own unique stories.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
To bring people together.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In this new age of entertainment I’m constantly pivoting but learning to enjoy it.
