We were lucky to catch up with Sasha A Bombfox recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sasha A, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I was a tap and jazz dancer in my youth and I remembered how much I loved it. As an adult I remembered watching performers on TV with fabulous costumes with tons of feathers and rhinestones. And then I was introduced to Dita Von Teese by watching a video of George Michael live in London. How amazing she looked and graceful. Fast forward to October 2015, I was at a local event called Trauma and I saw this troupe on stage called The Big Girl Burlesque and that gave me the confidence to reach out to someone. I am still mesmorized by those numbers and that troupe to this day I luckily had a friend who was part of a local troupe, The Sex Kitten Purrlesque, located in Columbus, Ohio. In December of 2015 at Bossy Grrls Pinup JointI made my debut and the crowd was amazing. And I knew then, that was where I wanted to be.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the industry when a friend of mine recommended to me to join the Sex Kitten Purrlesque and was introduced to Troupe leader at the time, Vixie Noir. Vixie is still to this day a great friend. I had to kitten a few times as a trail. Kittening is where you assist performers with setting up and cleaning up their numbers. The. In December 2015, I made my debut with a heavy metal number and a sing-n-fling.
As I’ve gotten older and more disabled, I’ve slowed to do more classic and teasing numbers than powerhouses. I think what sets me apart from others is that I have been all over the place with good an bad people, which over the years has helped me recognize when problematic issues arise. It definitely hasn’t been easy, and I’ve had to learn the hard way at times, but at this point in my life, it’s been all worth it.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being a performer, for me, gives me a chance to tell a story with my body and entertain. And it doesn’t matter what size, gender, color, you are, this is welcome to EVERYONE. At least in the community I’m in.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Being too prideful. I’ve made mistakes as everyone has. When I first started, I was very much in my high horse and I was talking to another performer about how terrible another person was. It turned out to be their burlesque child. I wasn’t booked for a show for a long time. I was so ashamed. As I’ve grown, I learned everyone bring their own value and art to the stage and all of it is beautiful. This industry is definitely a learning experience all the time.
