We were lucky to catch up with Sarim Dream recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sarim, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I’m mostly self-taught. However, with all my skills in business and my art I adopt the techniques and styles from the people I look up to and make those skills my own, once I’ve mastered it. I’m extremally curious and inquisitive so when in any space full of people I want to gain knowledge from I tend to ask any and every question I can think of.
I think the game changing factor that I was neglecting in my learning journey and the most important part was relationship building. If you have a problem or question there is always someone with a solution and/or an answer. Putting time and love into building a community and support system around me was the most impactful thing I could have done to progress. In the end, the only obstacles I had to growth was myself.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
WELL! My name is Sarim Dream, I get all my creative ideas from my dreams or visions. I’ve been and artist my whole life but It has only been the past six months that I’ve started my art career and I’m really excited to see myself reach my goals. My Mom is a Jazz singer, artist, and model. She used to inspire me to follow my dreams no matter what others say. So this year I’ve been improving my art skills, learning more about the music industry and music, making process while staring my business.
In my music I have a ton of inspirations, but as of now the main ones are Kendrick, Lady Gaga, Lauryn Hill, Willow, and JPEGMAFIA. I hope to take from these artist’s mindsets and skills to grow as an individual but honestly my inspirations change from time to time. My underlying goal is to be so individual and authentic I become an Icon in the entertainment industry. When is comes to my traditional art, I have always painted and drawn growing up with an artist. However, I started to develop my skills in my senior year of high school. The artists that I grew up learning about like, Basquiat, Van Gough, and Picasso inspired me greatly but the people who I looked up to the most were My mother and other local artists in Orlando. Watching others following their dreams and believe in themselves around me was my biggest inspiration.
My business, Serendipity’s Friend, is an art business that sells my art on eco-friendly products like, tote bags , prints, stickers, and bags. Everything is made to order with lots of love and care from ethical sources and 90% recycled materials. There is another side of my company that provides digital marketing services to small creative/wellness businesses and artists of all kinds. I believe that building a community is the most important part of anyone’s success and digital marketing can be a huge step in achieving this for small creatives and businesses, At Serendipity’s friend we believe in spreading love by making more opportunities for others to experience art.
I am most proud of myself for the amount of growth and progress I’ve achieved in these past few months. Especially struggling through mental health and finding the thin line between working hard and pushing myself to burn out. I’ve experienced so much love from the people who support my journey and I am so grateful and proud that I was able to end hyper-independence and learn from others. IF YOU WANT TO FOLLOW MY JOURNEY FOLLOW ME ON ALL PLATFORMS AT SARIM DREAM. The most important thing for my viewers to gain from me is, your dreams can become your reality and I want to spread love and positivity through my work.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
For me art is about radical honesty and authenticity, exposing your soul to the world in the most vulnerable form. I hope that others can feel this in my art and no longer feel alone or even start to understand or reflect on a side of themselves they ignore. I also hope to bring people together through my art and talents in a large impactful way.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me the most rewarding part of being an artist is the fulfilling feeling I get when I preform a song I’m really proud of, or send an artwork home with someone, or when the marketing champaign I’ve done helps a small videographer reach a whole new group of loyal customers. Simply put anytime my art positively touches another being I am filled with joy.
