We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sarap Fresh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
SaRap, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned how to rap by first and foremost being a fan of the craft. The next step was to realize I had a desire to do it and take action. Many people have desires, but fail to act, these desires can show up as clues such as envy or criticism. I learned to become aware of my desires and push through the fear toward tacking action. Less thinking more doing, overthinking can leave you in a paralyzed state of inaction, which is fueled by fear based thinking about the future. In hind site it’s silly, because no one knows the future, there is only now so act.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started recording music in 2013 in my studio apartment in LA and I’ve been releasing music ever since 2014. My skill as a writer, vocal performer, and mixer have grown steadily throughout that time. My music provides motivation and inspiration to be authentic and follow your path. I’m most proud of the courage I’ve displayed when expressing myself and moving through fear to get to the other side. Fear to write anything, fear to buy equipment, fear to have anyone hear what I’ve expressed, fear to perform in front of people, but I did it and I’m gonna keep doing it :)

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn that other people don’t have control over my value, and stop subconsciously seeking outside validation. I know my value and that lesson was very hard to unlearn, but that realization has allowed me to move through life lighter and take criticism not so personally.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The goal I’ve been working towards has always been self-discovery. Turn the mirror back on myself to see who’s driving the bus and how many backseat drivers there are. Because I like to cruise bruh, but it can be hard when somethings whispering in your ear that you need to speed up or you made a wrong turn.
