We were lucky to catch up with Sarang Lee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sarang, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I actually never thought about pursuing a creative path until I was a senior in my high school year when I got to think more deeply about what I really enjoy doing and something that I can confidently say that I won’t easily get tired of (I still struggle to find what I really enjoy doing sometimes.. even to these days.) Then, I found an old album that my mom kept since I was 6 (as I was cleaning my room to move to a new apartment). An album that starts with the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and with an answer of “an artist”, handwritten by a 6-year-old me. That hit me for some reason and I thought to myself, I should pursue art, that’s something that I love seeing and doing, and something that I will never get tired of.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I actually majored in illustrations, because I love to draw and color and build stories. As I practice illustration in schools, I realize the stories that I want to build are not fantasy in books but in real life, that those are with people in the real world. That’s when I decided to be a multi-disciplinary graphic designer who loves to explore new ways and things. My specialty is building branding and identity with relevant visual narratives through colors, shapes, and types in various compositions and mediums. I think being able to listen closely to what other people are thinking and bringing that to life is a fascinating thing.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative for me is connecting with people. Good designs attract and invite people to come together and share their thoughts more openly. A big part of my job was about designing an event space for hundreds and thousands of people can walk around, meet new people, share their thoughts, and get inspired, whether it lasted a day or a week. Now I hope to do the same in the digital world.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
This is a question that I throw myself every day as I continue my career as a creative. What is it that I want to create? And why do I want to? I still can’t elaborate on this in fine words though. All I know is I am still in the midst of a journey to find it and I can only find it through keep creating things whether it’s through satisfying my client or whether it’s through continuing on my personal crafts. I am in the midst of finding and building my personal brand with my creative works and elaborating that brand is my mission.
