We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sarajane Maples a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sarajane, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
In essence, I’m a hairstylist and a fully licensed cosmetologist, and I do hair full-time, but I am not behind the chair like most Hair Stylists. It never really felt like home behind the chair, and I always struggled to build a clientele in a traditional salon setting. I found my home in the world of styling that, including bridal and special events. many years ago, and I took a leap and created my business for brides and styling only and it was a huge risk, but it paid off. And as my career grew, so did other opportunities within the styling world. I started working with brands on social media campaigns and making money for creating content for their social media accounts. Taking that a little bit further, I started to fall in love with the photography element of creating content and about three years ago I incorporated photography into my business and now we see some of the work that we’ve created in nationwide campaigns and it’s truly amazing to see how even though you belong to an industry not everybody fits into a certain mold.

Sarajane, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Blush in Mane at its core is a bridal company that specializes in hair styling and on site bridal styling for weddings. But over the last few years, it has grown into a content creation brand. I’ve added photography to my services, and we now are creating beautiful, editorial images for print work and nationwide campaigns for different hair care companies.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
For me, at least the best way that I’ve grown my clientele is by utilizing free marketing a.k.a. social media. I typically will ask client how they found my name or how they got recommended to me and I would say nine times out of 10 It’s always through either Instagram or Facebook or TikTok even.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I feel like my biggest advice for anyone who’s trying to grow a social media presence is to be true to your audience. Find out what you love and stick to it people like consistency and they like to see that you are really passionate about it. They like to see you show your self off show your face and talk to the camera, your audience will engage!
