Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sarai Diaz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Sarai thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I was juggling, hair and make up for about 9years doing it on the weekends, while working in the medical field as a Lead Medical Assistant and still being a mommy of 2. I remember daydreaming about being home with my kids more than i was able to and doing make up full-time, I loved being of service and helping patients, but there was something about handing over the mirror to my client after finishing up the last detail, & looking at their face light up! I knew this is what I was ment to do in my life!
On Feb of 2020 I decided to part ways and follow my dreams and I did just that! I was scared to death I was going to fail and not make enough money for to support my house hold, but with the help of God I was able to do that and more! I was invited to be part of the glam team for the Latin Grammys in Las Vegas for two years in a row!
If you have a vision, I always say go all in!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Sarai known as Sarita La Bonita, I found myself always watching my cousin get ready for her outings, I was fascinated watching her use different make up products, so fascinated I would sneak in her room when she left and use all of them, I was about 12, I also learned a lot from watching my best friends mom work as a cosmetologist, I remember my friend and I using her manicure kit on each other, i also learned how to thread eyebrows at the age of 12, during my high school years all my friends would have me do their hair or eyeliner after P.E. I had my very first make up client at the age of 20, I loved it! I continued to pressure my hair and makeup career on the weekends while working as a fulltime medical assistant, fast forward 9 years later in 2020 i decided to quit my job and pressure my career as a fulltime hair and makeup artist. during those 9 years I made sure to keep learning beauty services and I now offer aside for hair and makeup, Lash extensions, Hair extensions, Brow Lamination, Lash List, Permanent make up, Brow Threading. after I decided to leave the medical field. i felt so FREE! i daydreamed of this for years! it finally happened i believed in my self and i made it happen, I’m currently in school for Barbering. Im a singe mother of 2 and although its been a long bumpy ride it has been so worth it! i would do it again if i could, this time i would of been more detailed and smarter on my decision making that is all.
I plan on becoming a salon business owner and I’m currently working on my own product line of Products to offer all my clients that somehow benefit them while using as Make up or skin care products.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My personality is definitely the highlight of my career, I feel like without it I wouldn’t be where I am today, I’m very approachable i love learning from others, I like constructive criticism. I get a sense of fulfillment the moment i show my clients what i have created and its definitely what i live for, my clients love how easy going I and how easy it is to work with me, I’m always very professional and make sure their needs are met due to that most of my clients are referred from word of mouth.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I worked in the medical field for 9 years while doing Hair and Makeup on the weekends, while learning different things and completing courses. i was able to finally leave and continue with my career and now i feel like I’m finally living my life and doing what ive always wanted to do. I have many things I’m currently working on as well!
