We recently connected with Sarah Whittemore and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, appreciate you joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
It has absolutely been a journey along the way, but being able to earn a full-time income as a freelance performer is possible. For most people, including me, overnight success rarely happens. Rather, a steady dedication to your craft, paired with determination, grit, and of course natural talent paves the way towards a fruitful reality. Many years of multiple part-time gigs, along with non-arts jobs like retail and waiting tables, led to my current scenario. You have to be willing to trust the process. First and foremost, be kind, be professional, be on time, and follow through in your work. Guiding principles will help the seeds you plant grow, becoming the great harvest you seek. Consistency is key.
Sarah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well, I make my living as both a studio and live vocalist. I’ve been performing since I was a child, but my career really began when I moved to Florida and started work with Disney Entertainment. You may have seen me perform with The Voices of Liberty at EPCOT, or even heard my voice on Disney fireworks, parades, and cruise ships around the world. I am also a member of the A Cappella group, VOCTAVE. While A Cappella music is certainly a passion of mine, I truly love singing in many other styles, especially jazz. I released my debut jazz EP, “Love Song,” in February of 2021, debuting #1 on the iTunes/Apple Music jazz charts. The project marked a dream fulfilled and provided and incredible opportunity to create work for myself and fellow musicians during the pandemic. Our industry was hit particularly hard during that time, and I was determined to overcome and pursue my craft despite such odds. My goal in all of the work I do is to be the performer you want to re-hire. I aim to be intentional, focused, and unique. Most importantly, I want my clients and peers to feel not only satisfied with my work, but truly inspired and moved.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I find great satisfaction in what I do. The reason is simple, music moves us. It is a powerful, transformative tool, and that’s a magic I want to continue making. My creative path is ever changing and evolving, which both challenges me and inspires me to grow not only as an artist, but a dynamic human as well.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
There are many obvious ways to support artists, whether it be purchasing music, attending a concert/event, or referring them to a prospective client. Another way you can support is to follow us on social media, like a post and share, or even just drop a comment. There’s no doubt social media is a powerful modern tool for promotion, and let me say first hand, when you engage with us on digital platforms, it goes a really long way and we are thankful!
