We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sarah Vargas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sarah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I’m so much happier working as an artist than working in legal or the criminal justice system. I was working in corrections and at a juvenile school where the caseloads and stress were too high.. I knew my sacrifice to make a change in the community was short. Being a creative artist I also do the same by collaborating with those from the streets ( photographers, videographers, ect. giving them a way to express their own ideas through me at times.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started in the modeling industry as a model for naughty by nature modeling their merchandise. I have done alot of different work such as boudoir, body painting, commercial, high fashion ect. Still trying to find what works best for me. My proudest moment was NYFW where I collaborated with a group of artists and designers and the show concluded as epic. Gaining followers has been a big challenge for me due to the amount of work I’ve done and the fact that I don’t really consider it to me a priority but it is as I continue to build my brand. The people are important. The potential I have is there to grow with the consumer as well.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My resilience is strong. I have overcome alot of obstacles in my life and career. Being an advocate as well I always try to make both into one. I give back to the community and also work alongside other artists who take their art into more positive direction rather than being in the streets that may lead to negative outcomes. I have worked with graffiti artist who do work for me rather than putting their energy into the street. We all have our own stories. Some don’t understand my heart into why i may choose to sometimes work with the underdogs of the modeling industry. I’m resilient towards the “no’s” I didn’t get the part or/and the opinions of others.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I have to unlearn is that everyone is not the same as yourself. It’s always disappointing to tryout for a part and no return call is given. I also understand everyone is busy in the industry and sometimes people forget to take the time to respond back. As I move along into acting, I see that alot and have unlearned to take it personal and understand someone else’s perspective on the business practices they have.
