We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sarah Vandekar. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sarah below.
Alright, Sarah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
My biggest risk, by far, has been moving across the country to start my own business.
I’ve lived in New York my entire life. The minus degree weather, rainy summers, and fast paced life was all I knew.
I’ve always dreamed of living in California, San Diego, to be exact.
Me and my now husband decided to take a trip to San Diego and once we did, we knew this is what we wanted…. and needed! At the time, I was working as a personal trainer at A corporate gym and knew that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my career.
I knew I wanted to work for myself, I knew that’s what I needed to really help people. I needed to get out of the corporate world and start putting the focus where it needed to be, with my clients.
After much discussion, and many tears, we made the move to San Diego. We packed up our 3 cats and all of our belongings and started on the road to our new life.
Fast forward 4 years and I have been successfully working as my own boss at Self Made Training Facility and I couldn’t be happier.
If you want something, don’t let anything stop you from pursuing it.

Sarah , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Why did I become a personal trainer?
Let me tell you a bit about myself first so that you can get to know ME first.
My name is Sarah and I am originally from NY but just recently moved to sunny San Diego to get away from the below freezing weather. When I am not training, you could find me at concerts, playing drums, skateboarding or anything else fun and adventurous.
Growing up , I was around close family members who struggled with eating disorders and soon found myself falling into the same path. Weighing myself everyday, barely eating, NOT going to the gym, and unhealthy choices led me to get down to 100 pounds by the time I was in my early 20’s.
The day that I decided to change my life and start a new healthy lifestyle was the best day of my life because not only did it change MY life, it also opened up a door for me to help other people. I became a personal trainer after I saw the change in myself both physically and mentally and I vowed that I would do that for other people. Fast forward a few years and I am living my dream of helping other people get healthy and to see their worth. I love my clients and would do anything to help them succeed in their goals.I specialize in:
– Weight Loss
– Muscle Building
– Functional Training
– Hitt Training
I offer:
– In person 1 on 1 Training
– Online Training
– Online Nutrition plans

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Learning every single day. Do not stop reading, do not stop researching!! Always learn and develop your craft.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Growing clientele is never easy, especially when you are starting over in a new state…. I had to learn patience every single day.
Never be afraid to show people your worth. Don’t just tell them, show them. Give them a sample of what you are all about, but don’t give them all of it. Make your clients see that they should choose YOU because your going to be the one that helps them.
