We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Seitz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, let’s start with a hypothetical – what would you change about the educational system?
Years ago, as a middle school and high school English teacher, I saw so many bright kids who just didn’t have good study skills. Brilliant students would fail a grading period simply because they didn’t have a system for writing down when assignments were due. In the end, I realized that I was largely grading my students based on their study skills (which wasn’t part of the curriculum), and not their true knowledge of the topics I was teaching. This big gap in our education system was frustrating. What did it matter if they could analyze poetry if they couldn’t maintain a planner?
I started The Enrichery determined to help kids develop those basic tools for success. This mission is the backbone for all of the services we provide to families, whether it is academic coaching, test prep, or college and graduate admissions.

Sarah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I grew up here in Houston, Texas as one of seven kids. Our house was like Grand Central Station with people always coming and going. Because of that, I got to know so many types of people and personalities. I loved learning about people and what made them tick. Later on in college at Vanderbilt, I double majored in Human & Organizational Development and English. I didn’t know it then, but this background set me up perfectly for running a business centered around helping my community.
I love watching our kids grow up. Our students who started with us in middle school grade are now coming back for help with their grad school applications, and I feel so incredibly proud of how far they’ve come. I am confident that they will go on to lead the next generation with strength, courage, and grace. I feel so lucky just to get to be a part of that growth.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
One of our core values at The Enrichery is Create Raving Fans. When I started this business, I had no marketing budget. I solely relied on doing right by my clients in hopes that they would help spread the word. Word-of-mouth marketing has been critical to our growth, and without it, I don’t think we’d be here today.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I’m an avid reader. A few books that I frequently return to include Masters of Scale by Reid Hoffman, The Practice of Groundedness by Steve Magness, and Radical Candor by Kim Scott.
