We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sarah Schlosberg a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sarah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I started my business with a mission: helping people feel confident and grow online with high quality images and videos while staying true to themselves. This started from feeling pretty lost in my own life, which led me down a path of curiosity, adventure, and traveling around the world. After picking up a camera and traveling from Italy, to India and all over South East Asia (not realizing until later that it was the exact “Eat, Pray, Love” path haha!) I felt my most confident self, in person and online, while traveling the world and posting beautiful high quality content that I produced!
Fast forward 3 years later, I photograph beautiful moments whether that be at events, concerts, or taking headshots to help businesses and entrepreneurs feel good, and staying true to their mission, when posting online. I wants business owners to feel confident posting engaging and meaningful content on multiple platforms such as, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn, Blogs, etc., to help foster a community, grow personally and financially.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I found my passion of photography while traveling around the world, meeting new people, and engaging with different cultures. I wanted to capture it all! Then the pandemic hit, I built out a SUV (solar panel, bed, refrigerator, anything you can think of) and drove from NY, all over the US, and finally ended up in San Diego where I currently reside. While on the road, I photographed weddings and worked in a photo studio for a bit where I learned everything I know about editing.
I currently focus on photographing events, from corporate to music festivals! A lot of my content gets posted online, such as LinkedIn and Instagram, so I always try to optimize for social media platforms; that’s what sets me apart form the rest. When photographing events, I’m always thinking “How does this business want to be portrayed online and how can my photos help convey that? What moments look engaging and can help build an online community?”
I am most proud of my current position of Photographer and Social Media Manager at Shipwrecks Fest, a growing local house music festival in San Diego! It combines my love of house music, community, photography, and social media. My images are being used on their Instagram account to help build a fast growing community and to bring likeminded people together in person (something I feel like we all need after the pandemic). I’ve always loved being around people and capturing joyful moments and now I can do that within a space that I feel truly aligned with and can help grow an online audience with meaningful content to spread their mission!
No matter what subject I’m photographing, I want my clients to feel confident when posting their images online to convey a message. Visual content plays such a powerful part in connecting with your audience and I can help you create that dynamic content.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
In person! People want to see your personality and I feel like I got the most clients when I would network at events I was already photographing. I also post all of my work on social media, such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and LinkedIn. I am a firm believer in photographing everything and feeling proud to post your work. You never know what people are looking for, so it’s good to have a variety of work on multiple platforms. You also never know where people are going to find your work, so I consistently post on different platforms and edit posts based on the platform I’m using.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I think the pivotal moment in my career was when I was able to get consistent work, focus on building my relationships with dependable and steady clients, and working on more creative projects. I am continuously learning and refining my skills, enabling me to get more creative projects and broadening my portfolio, which helps me expand my clientele. Another pivotal moment in my career was feeling confident in my pricing and investing in new gear when needed.
