Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sarah Sayre. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your professional career?
There are many life experiences that shape who we are. It is difficult to pin-point one specific lesson that can be attributed to my success as a business owner. At the outset, my photography was a hobby: a fun way to blow of steam and escape the stress of healthcare. While there were many factors at play that ultimately led me to pursue photography full time, it was challenging to leave a career in healthcare that I had spent the better part of a decade building.
A wise friend told me that education is never a waste. She was right. I quickly came to realize that many of my skills and strengths in healthcare were directly transferrable to photography. Much like nursing, running a photography business is a fine balance between science, interpersonal skills, time management, and patience. The same skills and strategies I applied to my education and career in nursing were instrumental in my ability to start a business as a photographer. God wastes nothing.
Working in healthcare provided me with so many opportunities. I have worked with people from diverse backgrounds, seen people at their happiest, and seen them at their most vulnerable. I would not be the person I am today had I not experienced the many challenges and life lessons I learned as a nurse. I think that, in and of itself, is an important lesson: to use prior work and life experiences to constantly learn and grow as humans.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a former nurse practitioner turned fine art photographer. I started Merece Photography in 2024 and offer a unique blend of fine art and family photography. I am particularly passionate about black and white photography (both film and digital) and recently launched my newest offering: Monochrome Portraits. My goal is to focus on physical products and prints for clients in 2025. There is nothing quite like holding a physical photograph in your hands, and I hope to share more physical media in the future.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
While I have many goals with my photography, I ultimately want people to feel special when they look at their own portrait. We often have such a skewed view of ourselves and I enjoy trying to highlight unique characteristics in every individual.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I really enjoy capturing authentic moments, emotion, and connection among people. Movement is perhaps my favorite method I utilize to capture this. While movement may sound counter intuitive for capturing a steady picture, allowing people to move around and be a bit silly while you photograph them often helps bring out genuine smiles and natural body language. When someone looks at a photograph and sees the connection I strive to capture, that is rewarding. God is the ultimate artist, I am just the woman with the camera trying to capture his handiwork.
