We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sarah Samdani a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
Hi! Thank you so much for another feature.
I’d always liked the concepts behind other current event-related pages, but I wished there was one for the law specifically. In the summer of 2020, I noticed more and more questions being asked about the law––why isn’t this person being charged immediately? Or how was that person’s sentence determined? I realized that while the answer could be found after doing a bit of research, it would be much easier if people could skim through posts that simplify legal concepts.
The few days after I realized this consisted of me reading different articles about common legal questions and playing around with Canva designs. I then put together my first few posts, created the Instagram account, and titled it “Legal Lessons.” I’ve stuck with that name ever since!

Sarah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Sure! I’m the person behind an Instagram account called Legal Lessons. In my weekly posts, I clarify some complex legal concepts and present explanations on past and present court cases or ongoing current events. Sometimes the posts can be short and simple, such as announcing a verdict in a popular case and breaking down what the verdict means. Other times, the post can be longer, such as when I present the sides of all parties involved in a situation. I’ve gotten some positive feedback from the people who follow my account that these posts really help anyone be able to understand some complicated legal jargon or a confusing trial verdict. Looking back to when I first started the page and knew very little about content creation, I’m proud of the skills and knowledge I’ve gained over the past three years running Legal Lessons. My Canva design skills have definitely improved since the beginning, and I’ve learned how to condense large amounts of information while still including the most relevant information in a post.
For anyone who feels overwhelmed by everything happening in the legal world, I hope Legal Lessons can serve as a useful guide and make understanding that world just a little bit easier.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Without a doubt, the most rewarding aspect of this is learning that my posts are helping people be more informed and teaching them something new. I think it can be easy to tune yourself out to everything happening in the world––and that’s understandable, given there’s always something going on––but it’s important to be curious about topics you do not know much about. Anytime I get an encouraging direct message or comment, it reassures me that the purpose behind Legal Lessons is being fulfilled in some way.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think it’s important to remember that every field has its experts and its less informed participants in the audience. One person may find certain legal concepts too obvious, while another may still feel overwhelmed and confused. Finding the right balance between clarifying difficult ideas and not oversimplifying them is a challenge, but it is well worth the time. When making a post, I remind myself that all people carry different levels of background information, so distinguishing between what is necessary and what is less relevant for each of my posts can be challenging. At the end of the day, educational accounts aim to inform people, regardless of how much they already know––I think remembering this can help put my posts, and similar accounts’ posts, into perspective.
