We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sarah Sain. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sarah below.
Sarah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
As a full service design + remodeling company, our goal is to take the stress out of a renovation for our clients. From the beginning of the project, we help make every and all design selections and can help our homeowners avoid decision fatigue. Once every selection is made, our team orders and stores each item well before construction begins to ensure no delays in shipping. That alone saves our clients the headache of multiple deliveries and keeping items labeled and organized. During the remodel, our team keeps our clients up-to-date with Builder Trend Software so our clients can see a timeline, payment schedule, weekly updates and their entire contract should they have questions. We also appreciate our clients trust in us to finish every last detail and it’s our goal to always go above and beyond to serve our clients well and with integrity.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My husband, Matt, and I started Sain Homes officially back in 2019. Before then, we were flipping houses on the side while working our full time jobs. We were both born and raised in the industry but never thought we’d make remodeling homes our full time career. Matt grew up in Hickory, NC and is a fourth generation builder. He spent weekends building homes alongside his Dad and learned everything from laying the foundation to putting on the roof, and everything in between. I grew up outside of Brevard, NC and worked with my family on our own fixer upper. My Dad gave me my first design project at 13 complete with a timeline and a budget. From a very young age, I was always encouraged with my creativity and I’m very grateful for that.
Matt and I bought our own builder grade home after we got married in 2009 and fixed it up room-by-room. We then went on to help family and friends with small projects and design advice. Once we started flipping homes, we knew this was what we were made to do.
Our background in flipping homes gives us insight for where our clients should or shouldn’t invest their money during their remodel. We treat every client project as if it’s our own home, so take pride and care with every decision we make.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My best advice for anyone wanting to build a following and/or get clients via instagram (which is how we get most of our business), is to 1) Be authentic and 2) Be consistent.
We know that remodeling homes is an intimate thing. We’re going to talk about money and toilets and how you like to shower, so it’s important to build trust as you enter into this partnership of renovating someone’s home. Showing up and being your true self, even giving sneak previews and behind the scenes of projects, gives potential clients and followers a chance to see how you really work and who you are as a business.
And just like anything that’s hard won, it takes consistency to find success. Mapping out a monthly schedule or weekly routine with what you want to share on social media, and then showing your face in stories to your followers, means a growing audience is inevitable.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
I think it’s so important to make sure that you’ve got the right people in the right seat on your team. Last year Matt and I had our team write down a list of things they 1. Love doing and are good at, 2. Love doing and are not good at, 3. Don’t love but are good at and 4. Don’t love and are note good at. We evaluated this list and made some hard but necessary changes within our organization to help our people work to their greatest potential in a job that fulfills them.
We also regularly get together to share a meal in between job site checks and have the entire team come eat dinner in our home about once a month. These times together builds camaraderie within the team and gives us a chance to know what’s going on in their personal lives.
Our annual Christmas party is also a highlight of the year for our team. We rent out several lanes at the bowling alley, eat a bunch of good food, and give our team some branded swag to wear throughout the year.
