We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Roche recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I believe that success is a dynamic combination of determination, adaptability, and the presence of a strong support system. The decision of whether to persevere or pivot can be tough, but striking the right balance between these elements is crucial. My perspective on this has been shaped by my own experiences and journey.
My story begins with a passion for music, which led me to study Classical Piano Performance at Leeds Conservatoire in the UK. After graduation, I dove into teaching full-time but soon realized that it wasn’t my true calling. This realization was not giving up; rather, it fueled my determination to find a path that allowed me to integrate my love for music while also pursuing a fulfilling career. This initial setback propelled me into exploring different avenues.
My career trajectory took me through diverse roles, from managing properties at a real estate company to pursuing post-graduate studies in International Business at Maynooth University in Ireland. This experience not only broadened my skill set but also enabled me to discover my passion for communications and cross-cultural management. I saw the value of blending my interests in music and business, and this idea became the cornerstone of my aspirations.
My journey eventually led me to White Bear PR, an organization specializing in publicity for film and media composers in Hollywood. This role perfectly encapsulated my dual interests in music and communications. Working as a Publicist in a fast-paced and ever-changing industry has been both rewarding and challenging. Navigating a new city, culture, and profession has its difficulties, but I consider myself immensely privileged to be in this position.
The essence of success, as I’ve come to understand it, lies in the ability to keep moving forward, even when faced with challenges. My experiences taught me that it’s essential to recognize when a change in direction is necessary, without interpreting it as giving up. The support system I’ve built along the way, along with my determination to align my passions with my career, has been instrumental in reaching where I am today.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My journey is one that has been fueled by a deep passion for music and a desire to combine it with the world of communications and business. I began my educational journey by learning the piano in Ireland as a child and went on to study Classical Piano Performance at Leeds Conservatoire in the UK, laying the foundation for my love of music. Most reacently, I completed my post-graduate studies in International Business at Maynooth University.
This journey ultimately led me to White Bear PR, a dynamic organization specializing in publicity for film and media composers in the heart of Hollywood. In my role as a Publicist, I’m fortunate to be part of a team that bridges the worlds of music and communications, a combination that resonates deeply with me. This dynamic industry demands adaptability and resilience, as it is both fast-paced and constantly evolving.
What sets me apart is the fusion of my musical background, business acumen, and passion for communications. This unique blend allows me to approach my work from a multifaceted perspective, offering innovative solutions to the challenges of the film music world.
I take immense pride in my journey and the trajectory that has led me to where I am today. I’m privileged to work in an industry that marries my interests seamlessly. What I want clients to know is that I bring a deep understanding of both music and communication to the table. My work not only solves the publicity needs of film and media composers but also embodies the synergy of my diverse background.
In a world where change is constant, I strive to offer a fresh perspective and innovative strategies. I firmly believe that success lies in the balance between determination and adaptability, and I’m excited to continue growing, learning, and making meaningful contributions to the film music industry. My journey is a testament to the power of staying true to one’s passions while embracing the twists and turns that come along the way.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My journey from Ireland to the UK and eventually to the bustling landscape of Los Angeles in pursuit of a career in the film music industry has demanded resilience and adaptability. Navigating through different cultures, industries, and cities, I’ve embraced change as an opportunity to learn, grow, and forge my path in a dynamic and competitive field. Each step of my journey has reinforced my belief in the power of perseverance and the ability to thrive amidst diverse challenges.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
While I may be in a slightly more conventional job working as a publicist the a composer or musician, there’s a facet of my journey as a creative that might be challenging for non-creatives to fully grasp. The creative path, while incredibly rewarding, comes with its unique set of challenges that extend beyond the surface.
One of the aspects that might not be immediately apparent is the sheer amount of effort and persistence required to attain any form of success. The process of honing one’s craft, whether it’s in music, writing, or any creative field, demands relentless dedication and what can often be referred to as “hard graft.” It’s not just about the end product that the world sees; it’s the countless hours of practice, experimentation, and revision that precede that polished creation.
Moreover, there’s an element of uncertainty and unpredictability that is inherent to the creative journey. Unlike more traditional career paths, where progression might be relatively linear, creative careers often involve navigating a landscape where luck and timing play significant roles. Success is not guaranteed, even if you pour your heart and soul into your work. This can be a difficult concept for non-creatives to fully understand, as it defies the conventional notion of a straightforward career trajectory.
For those who might not have experienced this firsthand, I hope this insight sheds light on the complexities of the creative journey. It’s a path that requires a unique blend of passion, resilience, and a bit of that intangible magic that helps turn dreams into reality.
