We recently connected with Sarah Roberts and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
I started my “career” at an early age when my sister and I would make string bracelets while on vacation and walk down the beach selling them. We also would make things and ride door to door in our neighborhood on our golf cart to sell our creations. This really shaped my entrepreneurship and prepared me for adulthood in the creative field. It taught me not to be afraid to try new things, and it gave me confidence that people liked what I was creating. So my first dollar made, even as a six year old, felt so rewarding and impactful!

Sarah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Sarah O’Mary Roberts, a graphic designer, painter and all around creative. From a very early age I was interested in creating anything and everything, and then selling my creations (mostly to my parents who also bought the supplies for me to make said creation. Thanks, dad)! This inevitably lead to a career as a designer. I live in a small town in Alabama where my studio sits on Main Street in our downtown area. I provide full service design work at SarahOMaryDesigns, and I specialize in event invitations (weddings, showers, parties), small business branding, and custom artwork. As a small business myself I am passionate about meeting with new people and creating a brand that they love. My favorite thing about my job is creating new designs for invitations and seeing them come to life through print! I also love creating custom pet and venue illustrations which can be used across many different media such as on cups/koozies, stationery, digitally, printed, etc.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Work Life Balance! My biggest goal in my creative journey is to ENJOY my work, be creative, and have fun. When those things are happening you’re also enjoying life and having fun outside of work too. I have been extremely blessed to be self employed which means I can work from anywhere. This leads to new inspiration and ideas because I’m not stuck in a box. So I would say my biggest goal is to work really, really hard in order to continue my work life balance and my work flexibility.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
We need our communities to support creatives through patronage, but even beyond that there are so many ways to support your creative friends and family without spending any money. SHARE every social media post from a small business you love. TELL others about your great experience with your favorite shop. PARTICIPATE in social media posts. By commenting on posts that you like, you’re helping boost it to others who might not otherwise see it on their feed.
