We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Pfeifer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project that I created recently is called “Everybody’s Hollywood”. It was my senior thesis in college. I graduated in May 2020 so due to Covid, it was never shown. This project was inspired by the Body Positivity Movement and the recent push for representation for all in media. With this body of work, I addressed the question, “What would Hollywood have looked like if it was diverse all along?”
In order to answer this question, I picked iconic and cult classic movies and recreated them with people of different bodies, ethnicities, genders, etc. The body of work means so much to me because growing up I never saw a curvy Disney Princess or the girl in the movie was never my size. I have worked very hard to reach the level of self-acceptance and body positivity that I am at now and this work radiates that energy.
Sarah , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a portrait and commercial photographer, I make authentic and thought-provoking imagery with a focus on lifestyle portraits. In 2020, I graduated Magna Cum Laude and was named Outstanding Senior for the photography department. My education from Columbus College of Art & Design taught me how to break out of my comfort zone and always strive to grow my knowledge. I have been published in magazines such as (614), Needlework Retailer, and Just Cross-stitch, and was named one of Columbus’ top 10 commercial photographers by PeerSpace.
My love of art and photography allows me to experiment with other mediums and techniques to make ever-evolving personal work. I am incredibly passionate about photography; I especially like to push to see how I can create texture or experiment with taking my photos out of the frame of reference. I have exhibited work at juried art fairs across Central and Northern Ohio.
When I am behind my camera, I am truly at my happiest. My past employment with The Walt Disney Company sparked my love for narrative and people. It is very important to me that I always bring my best energy and willingness to work to every job so that my clients can trust me to create intimate, authentic photographs while capturing their stories, products, or most authentic selves.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think that my excitement and passion for photography have really boosted my reputation in the industry. I show up to every shoot with a willingness to work and excitement to capture their passion for their product/service/business/self. This energy shows through as 90% of my clientele are referrals from other satisfied clients.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a photographer is how excited my clients get when they see their images. You never know how someone was feeling on the day of a shoot. If they were having a bad day, not feeling their most confident, or even just have a lot going on in life. However, to see someone light up when they see something they’ve been working on, or even themselves, is the most rewarding feeling.
