We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Olivia Lawrence recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah Olivia , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear stories from your time in school/training/etc.
My formal education beyond high school was in product development. I attended FIDM, the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. Attending fashion school was recommended to me by my high school history teacher, who was an African-American history teacher. He told me that because I liked fashion and lived in the middle of nowhere, it could help me stay interested in school and expand my vision for what was possible for me. He went out of his way to believe in me by inviting a fashion history representative to fly out to our school. He also made sure I didn’t miss class that day, as I used to skip classes frequently. Teachers like him, who go out of their way to support and believe in their students, are truly special.
To anyone in the educational space or self-development:
You are a priceless gem with infinite potential waiting to be uncovered. Embrace the journey of self-discovery and personal growth, for within you lies the power to achieve greatness.
Here are my Recommendations for thriving in an educational setting:
Step 1: Acknowledge that self-image holds greater significance than the effort you exert. Realizing this concept earlier in my college years could have transformed my experience. The first step is recognizing your true self. It’s not just about your external appearance or titles; according to psycho-cybernetics, your self-image reflects how you envision achieving your ultimate dream. This transcends the physical and involves exploring your psychology, understanding human design, and acknowledging that self-study is an act of self-love, which can be more impactful.
Step 2: Document the changes you undergo while acquiring new knowledge, as it can significantly accelerate your progress. Failing to understand your learning style hinders your ability to replicate your successes. Reflect on whether you see yourself as conquering a mountain, using obstacles as stepping stones, or simply striving to complete tasks one by one. Take a moment to pause, breathe deeply, focus on your breath, and write down three significant achievements and insights gained from your most challenging experiences. I strongly believe that true success lies in extracting valuable lessons at every stage. This approach ensures a continuous journey of accomplishments as you consistently gain wisdom from each encounter. Over time, you will accumulate a wealth of insights to create something even more extraordinary.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I used to believe that the key to success was simply working hard and being kind. This belief was ingrained in me for a long time, serving as my guiding principle. While it is an admirable mindset taught to me by well-meaning adults, I have come to realize that hard work and kindness need to be directed inward. According to the law of the mind, your mind is the determining factor for the experiences you perceive in life. Self-love stems from prioritizing kindness towards yourself first. This can be challenging, as it may feel unnatural or selfish. However, the consequences of neglecting self-compassion are not worth it, so be kind to yourself. Kindness should be directed inward, and hard work involves seeing the good in everything.
If only I had known earlier that success is not just about blind kindness and relentless hard work; it is more of an art. Hard work can become overwhelming if not managed properly. I now see hard work as a magical wand, with the mind serving as the tool to transform challenges into masterpieces, much like sculpting beautiful statues.
For instance, when facing life’s difficulties, it is essential to confront them directly, whether through physical challenges like a workout or personal endeavors. However, it is crucial to stay true to your internal compass and never compromise your values. Kindness should always be directed inward, nurturing yourself first, as this will strengthen your inner resolve and propel you towards greatness.
Discovering a way to address challenges while maintaining kindness towards oneself is the ultimate recipe for success. It is about finding a balance between hard work and self-compassion, creating a harmonious blend that leads to personal growth and achievement.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
If I could go back in time, I would most likely have taken the same actions but with a different mindset. I am aware of this because in my spiritual work, I frequently journey into the past to assist individuals in discovering their soul’s desires. I refer to this process as creating a spaceship. Here is how you can create a spaceship:
Step 1: Imagine yourself back in college or right before a significant decision in your life. Recall your favorite song at that time or your favorite things. Put on your headphones, meditate to that favorite song, and reminisce about how it felt to be you. Your life experiences are not just memories; they are still active energies within you.
Step 2: Instead of dwelling on regrets, travel back in time through the sensations of your favorite things such as music, scents, candles, snacks, creating an environment that evokes that specific time. Once you feel like that version of yourself again through your senses, imagine that you made better choices.
Step 3: Return to the present moment as if you have added value to your spiritual bank account, allowing you to shape your future with love and compassion. This process can help you envision a different path based on your newfound perspective.
Upon engaging in this practice, I realized that I would not have made different decisions about my career. I would still have pursued fashion school. However, I would have possessed more confidence in myself, which could have ultimately guided me towards my spiritual journey, which is the path I am currently on, alongside working on fashion projects.
