We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Mundy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
When I was 18 years old I had just graduated cosmetology school and was trying to find my way. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to do hair or nails- so I tried both. I very quickly learned that hair didn’t fill me the way nails did, so I got a job at a nice higher end spa. I worked a full time job at the spa and loved it, but still knew I wanted more. One day while getting a pedicure from the woman who trained me for my job at the spa said to me, “I am moving and would like to know if you would like to purchase my business, all of the clientele, and products that are in this room!” immediately overcome with fear I told her, “Me!? I’m only 18 and have less than a year of experience!” I went home and thought about what a huge risk I’d be taking, but also how rewarding it could be! I began training with her, learning her clientele, and bought the business. Shortly after the spa I was working at ended up closing and this was the BEST decision I could’ve made! 9 years later, a full clientele, a waitlist, and a huge passion for what I do- the risk was absolutely worth it!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Sarah Nails It, I am a nail artist who specializes in natural nails, the health and longevity of your nails, and an artist! Your fingernails are my favorite canvas. I love abstract art, color, florals, and everything boho. I began doing nails when I was 18, and became my own boss by the age of 19. I think I am set apart because I truly care about the health of your nails, and our time spent together. I always look forward to conversation, getting to know my clients and building a natural and genuine connection with one another. I am most proud of being nominated as a top 10 nail artist in the US by Cosmoprof Beauty! I love learning and staying relevant with todays styles, and social media!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
When I began doing nails social media really wasn’t what it is today, and I have loved watching it evolve and come to what it is today! It is such a great place for inspiration, finding others all across the world you can relate to, and so much more! I started to grow my social media audience by taking really fun photos of my clients with their hands in the photo. A photo they would WANT to post on their page. I would use a ring light, get a cute photo, edit, and send to them! It kind of became what new clients knew when they came in. They’d say, “i did my hair and makeup today because I am so excited for a picture with my nails!” From there their followers saw my work, and with each person brought a whole new type and number of followers. Still to this day I take photos of every clients nails, and try to post everyday. The most important thing is consistency.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the relationships I get to build with my clientele and audience. There is nothing more rewarding than hearing someone say, “My nails are my favorite accessory.” or “I get so many compliments always!” It is so fun bringing so much joy into others lives by creating little pieces of art on their nails.
