We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Mount recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sarah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My band, Sarah Mount & the Rushmores, is by far the most important project I’ve ever created.
This started out more than four years ago when I was approached by Your Mom’s House to host the Tuesday open jam every month. I used this as an opportunity to treat the band as a collective and feature different players, and a different set list every month. Sometimes we would do covers, other times we would improvise the whole set even letting the audience pick the key on the spot. I had so much fun with this for nearly two years, and enjoyed the freedom and the freshness this approach provided.
I ended up walking away from my open jam residency because I was getting approached with big gig opportunities, and wanted to pursue them full force. While I was getting approached I also changed my own approach with my band. I decided to stick with a static lineup, started curating a unique sound, and focused on creating originals. This method worked out very well for us, and is the same approach I use to this day. Soon enough we found ourselves opening up for well known bands, recording and distributing original music, and loving every minute.
Fast forward to today, my band is the monthly resident at a world renowned jazz club Dazzle in Denver, our music is being heard around the globe, still upholding the freedom improvisation provides, and I still feature fresh faces for every show. I’m very proud of my players, the current momentum, and the accomplishments this project has provided.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As a brand, I do consider myself an entertainer or creative. Beyond being a performer, I also create art, teach both art and music, create my own contacts on social media, booking, manage myself and a lot of my other bands, brand ambassador, graphic designer, photography, and occasionally model.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
There are many ways to support your local creative scene, and some of them are even free!
Participate in an art or music class.
Set up a commission with your favorite artist.
If you are able, donate to the arts.
Buy artwork, albums, tickets, and merchandise.
Offer emotional support.
Attend exhibits, shows and openings.
Share content, like, comment, and follow on social media.
Tell your friends! Word of mouth is huge.
Spread joy by gifting.
Encourage your friends and family to get involved in the arts.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
My most rewarding moments are on stage, or delivering that special piece of artwork. It’s a wonderful thing to have such a unique impact on others, and I feel so fortunate for the role everyday.
