Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sarah Moser. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Sarah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Some of the most interesting parts of our journey emerge from areas where we believe something that most people in our industry do not – do you have something like that?
Designing a space with the current popular trends of the moment.
I usually tell my clients NOT to follow the current design trends. I loathe when designers proclaim what is trendy and what is in or not. Design is subjective. Design should be personal and tailored for the homeowner, not for what is currently trending. I tell my clients to choose what they genuinely like regardless of trends because they are the ones who will be living in that space.
Sarah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Sarah Moser, a home stylist and interior decorator based in San Antonio, TX. I created Pink Pueblo Designs in 2020, pivoting from being furloughed from my retail job and navigating a new world with the COVID-19 Pandemic. I always wanted to develop my interior design firm, and 2020 allowed me to finally chase that dream as the world slowed down and everyone was spending time at home.
After graduating from The University of Texas at San Antonio, I took on a career in operations and marketing and loved working behind the scenes. I had an opportunity to switch gears and become self-employed as a real estate and renovation team project manager. I jumped on it, even though I had zero experience flipping and selling houses. This role is where my love for interior design began. Working on old abandoned houses and bringing them back to life with new paint and tile was thrilling and fulfilling to see those before and after pictures. Working with investors, I usually had a tight renovation budget. I worked primarily with real estate investors who wanted the best ROI and didn’t care about the design and finish-outs. I was limited to using basic materials and tight budgets, which inspired and planted the seed for me that one day I could design for homeowners who wanted to transform their homes into their sanctuary. I wanted to work with clients who would be living in these spaces and wanted to collaborate and design with the homeowner. A global pandemic provided me with reflection, time, and space to create Pink Pueblo Designs.
Pink Pueblo Designs is an interior design studio dedicated to bringing people home décor tips and design. Our services are tailored based on what you need for your home and space. We help with home renovations and home decorating projects. We create clean, thoughtful rooms and environments tailored to your home and needs. We help you tell your story through design and decor to showcase your personality in your home. We believe your home and environment should evoke a feeling of order and happiness and be your sanctuary.
We offer virtual design services, styling services, and project management for home renovations. My role at Pink Pueblo Designs is as the owner and lead designer.
I’m most proud of the experience and expertise we can bring with design. My home construction and real estate background taught me to look past the pretty and ensure your home renovations are thoughtfully planned before we start the fun and functional design and decorating process. What sets us apart from others is we get to know our clients and spend a lot of time getting to know them, their house, and their design style. I’m a true believer that home takes time, and you shouldn’t rush the process. We take the time to get to know you and your style and help you piece together unique finds that bring your personality to your home.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Being on leave in 2020 made me evaluate my passions and start to think about what my next move would be. Spending a lot of time at home, I was changing and editing my space to fit my current needs of being home all the time. Quarantine inspired me to make the leap and start my interior design business to help others transform their space. I truly believe if I wasn’t forced to pivot due to the Pandemic, I don’t know if I would have enough courage to start this business.
Starting a business in 2020 came with lots of lessons.
With global stock issues and shipping delays, furniture that was in stock and ready to ship was hard to come across. My clients were frustrated and did not want to wait 6- 8 months for their furniture to arrive to complete their spaces. Purchasing and finding ready-to-shop furniture in stock for my clients was a struggle. Here we had to pivot how we sourced and shopped for clients turning to the Facebook marketplace, antique stores, estate sells, and local makers to source furniture instead of the usual big box stores. We had to get creative with home decor, which helped us find some fantastic decor pieces hidden in my client’s garage, like an old guitar now turned into a focal art piece for a project.
It is essential to pivot and note that it’s not the end of the world when you have to shift. You usually find better solutions when pushed outside your comfort zone.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
There was a time when I wasn’t sure how the business would continue to grow and survive. Starting a business during the Pandemic was eye-opening. Starting a business, in general, takes a lot of time and takes resources. My naivety looking back now is probably a pro. Otherwise, I don’t know if I would have embarked on this entrepreneurial journey.
I also think acknowledging that I needed help and that my young business would need capital to move forward was a vital step in the development. Call it resiliency or stubbornness, but I didn’t want to quit or fail. Instead, I looked back and identified where the business was going and where I wanted to go. Home design services are not a necessity. It is a luxury. With people spending differently due to the economy, I had to learn where to find ideal clients, and I had to learn how to charge for my services correctly to keep the business afloat. Instead of quitting, I took a break from taking on new clients to reevaluate the business model and structure. Now we are looking to add more areas of revenue alongside working with clients. We love sourcing and shopping for home decor so much that we are looking into opening our storefront of home goods to sell directly to our clients.
