We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sarah Monzon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sarah below.
Alright, Sarah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
All of the novels I have written have been meaningful to me for one reason or another. Writing, for me, is a very vulnerable journey, as I put a lot of personal experiences and emotions into my stories. One of my more recent projects, however, that has a special place in my heart is a book I released earlier this year, An Overdue Match. The heroine, Evangeline, has lost all of her hair due to alopecia, an autoimmune disorder. The book is her journey of self discovery of beauty, love, and worth. I wanted to write a romance novel with a heroine who has experienced hair loss in honor of my mother who was diagnosed with alopecia when she was a teenager. I wanted to write a main character that would represent her and her unique beauty, both inside and out.

Sarah , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those who may not know me, I am a military spouse, mother of two, and an award-winning novelist. I write romantic comedies that are lighthearted but have depth and are written from a Christian worldview. Reading and writing stories has always been more than a hobby or job for me. I’ve always struggled with social anxiety, processing emotions, and understanding the people around me. Getting into the minds and emotions of fictional characters has helped me to understand how other people think and feel. Literature is a safe space to grow both cognitively and emotionally. As a writer, I want to take the power of story to offer both an entertaining escape from the hardships of everyday life as well as highlight the diversity of humanity through character backstory to encourage empathy among readers.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
In the last few years, I have tried to focus my writing and my stories on filling the gaps on people and subjects that seem to be underrepresented in fiction. I think everyone deserves to feel seen and heard and read about a main character that looks or sounds or acts or has experiences just like them.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
There is a verse in the Bible that says a laborer is worth his wage. Unfortunately, it seems that we have a culture that has devalued a lot of creative work, and the expectation from a lot of consumers is a free or discounted creative product. I think one of the best ways society can support artists and creatives is to value the product they create and be willing to pay for that product what it is worth.
