We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Mondet recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
For as long as I can remember I have loved design, aesthetics, nature, peaceful places, and creative outlets. I’ve always wanted to create something outside the framework of disposable consumer products that would offer a meaningful experience. For a long time now this desire has been developing into the concept of creating luxury picnics, as it encompasses all of the things that speak to my heart. While living in Europe, creating a luxury picnic business always seemed out of reach due to the four seasons and a very limited window of opportunity. So when I moved to San Diego, where the weather is lovely all year long, I knew my picnic idea had to come to life… I specifically wanted to focus on luxury-boho picnics and during that time nobody in San Diego was doing it. I was the first in the market. My mission was simple: Bring aesthetics and comfort to nature spaces throughout San Diego and create opportunities for people to enjoy quality time together. Relax and connect with each other while getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to enjoy the beautiful ambiance and closeness with nature.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Sarah; I was born and raised in Europe, I’ve traveled to over 50 countries, and eventually settled down in beautiful San Diego, California. I’ve always been a wanderer, a hippie at heart, and one who loved to escape city life at every chance; to breathe in nature’s beauty while enjoying good company and great food. When you put that all together, it pretty much sums up what sparked my passion for offering unique and intimate picnic experiences.
My goal was to create something that allows people to experience nature in a seamless way, with luxurious comfort and pleasing aesthetics. With this philosophy in mind, I founded Picnic by Nature, which offers picnics with a unique bohemian style inspired by travel to far off places. I want to give people the opportunity to slow down, unwind, and spend quality time with the people they care about.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What really helped me build a reputation witin my market was that there was no market. I was the first to bring the niche of bohemian-styled picnics to San Diego. I just looked around and saw that something like this was missing. My real innovation was simply creating my niche and puting it on display. Bohemian design has become very popular within the last few years so people really welcomed the idea of creating exterior boho spaces.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Much of my client generation comes from social media, specifically Instagram. It’s a great visual platform for my visual product. My website is also a great tool to attract new clients. It provides all information they need and is the easiest way for people to book a picnic.
