We recently connected with Sarah McCormick and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Growing up my family always loved cooking together. When I met my husband Dane I loved seeing my future Mother in law have so much fruit around her house. She was the family jam connection. 7 years later we began to be obsessed with our local farms and I chose to sweeten our jam with honey and raw sugar. My husband soon encouraged me to expand a fun hobby to a thriving family business. This led to me quitting my job and starting a family. Now we have two beautiful children and are quickly growing. Being in a small space with lots of jam and two crazy kids can be tough, chaotic and emotionally draining. But, with a partner who has like minded goals and dreams we see them all approaching so quickly.

Sarah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
From a husband’s view, I’ve watched my beautiful wife be under appreciated at different companies over the years. But being so talented at anything she puts her mind to, I loved seeing her realize the potential of her jam making skills. I love seeing her feel confident enough to jump into this art form that has created an opportunity for me to showcase my love of community in the form of markets and my love of sales and marketing.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
While our business has created the path to parenthood for me, pregnancy was amazing but brutal. I had severe cholestasis and hyperemesis with both of my children that left me suffering every day until conception. It was incredibly difficult to get production done. But even with that going on I still pushed through and created hundreds of jars on those long summer days. Although nowhere near the amount of production were doing now it felt like an amazing feat.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Having started small, we have worked to pour everything extra into our business. We’re proud that we have grown wonderfully but responsibly. Utilizing our incredibly supportive and large family for childcare when we are in the kitchen has allowed up to ramp up production. To be honest we sacrifice so much to put our sales right back into our business. It’s important to remind yourself it will pay off.
