We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sarah Massingale a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My glass bead earring line is extremely meaningful to me, as the each piece is unique, and named after women that I know. Every woman is one of a kind and stands out in their own way, so I wanted to showcase that with each pair. Creating earrings that remind me of each woman the earrings are named after and being able to utilize that as a way to celebrate every woman and their individuality has been such a great experience, especially when I get to hear the women tell me that they felt seen or special when the earrings go live online.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Singular Styles is a handmade jewelry company, with business being conducted largely via the website, www.singularstylesbysarah.com. While it is currently just jewelry, I do have hope to expand to other products down the line. The concept of Singular Styles is that every piece is unique, or singular, just like the person who buys it, and just like every person it is named after, when it comes to my beaded earring line. Everyone deserves to feel special and have things that are one of a kind, no matter where they are in life, and I wanted to provide opportunity for that. I started creating jewelry for fun as part of a batch of gifts I was going to give the other delegates at a pageant I competed in, and each necklace I had made utilized the same color palette, the pageant’s colors, but every one of the 50 necklaces was different, to showcase that while each girl was unified in our organization and area of service, we were also all different in what we had to offer. Later that year, my father passed away and I began to make jewelry more consistently, in an attempt to find a creative and productive outlet for my feelings, and shortly thereafter Singular Styles was born.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal with Singular Styles is to someday be able to make my business my main source of income. My sister has an intellectual disability, and due to this, needs more aid than other individuals her age. After losing my father in 2021, my mom and I have had to work additionally hard to be able to care for her and my grandfather as well as to be able to make ends meet, as my father was the main financial provider for our family, while my mother cared for my sister and grandfather at home. I have worked since before he passed, but never made much money (I had just finished my masters degree a few months before we lost him), and am contributing how I can, but working a full-time job, 6 days a week, out of the house doesn’t leave much room for flexibility when I am needed to assist my family. If and when I achieve my goal of making my income solely from Singular Styles, I will be able to work from anywhere, anytime that I can or want, so that I can live my own life, participate in trips and activities with my fiance and friends, so that I can help care for my family, and still be able to provide for them as well.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is seeing the joy my work brings people. I am always so happy and fulfilled when people see a piece that they love and that strikes something in them. I love seeing the women I name my earrings after feel how special they truly are when they see the pieces that are named after them, and even more so when they love the earrings that are named after them and feel like that’s the perfect pair to represent them. I love being able to share with the world how wonderful the women around me are.
