We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Lynn Dawson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah Lynn , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a British actress and filmmaker and I have been lucky to travel since I was very young. My Father worked in Qatar so we split our time between the UK and there. Then after college I moved to the USA and became a citizen here. I love the USA because it has so many different places and such an entrepreneurial spirit. I trained as actress at the New York’s Lee Strasberg Institute of Film and Television and I have been acting since I was a child mainly on stage. I am based in LA but I like to travel back to the UK and London frequently. I love learning about different cultures and seeing new places and it inspires me creatively. Workwise I am acting and producing. With the important SAG strike I have been focusing on producing. I have produced several short films such as Unsolved where I played the lead role of Alice Clark the LAPD’s first female detective in the 1940’s film noir, which played in many festivals. Other films I have produced, include Duality, which I wrote and acted in and which was narrated by Deepak Chopra and premiered at the Hollyshorts Film Festival. Right now I am producing two features, Horizon, which is a Sci-Fi and the other Three Days of Darkness, which is a suspense film. They both have their challenges however I have a great team which I am grateful for.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think it is seeing a project come to life from nothing. When I write a script, then have a reading it is always a joy to hear actors say the lines for the first time. With great actors they make the characters their own. Then you work with amazing Directors and Producers and the whole project takes shape. It’s a kind of magic really. Each person on a film project brings their creativity and talent from the actors to the production designer to the editor. I feel really blessed to be a part of the process. Recently I produced the second season of our podcast ‘Stepping into Shakespeare’ which myself and my partner Therese Theurillat created. We did a hybrid event in London which included a live performance and then a full recording of ‘Twelfth Night’ in a pro-studio in London. It all came together really well and I got to work with a fantastic group of British actors. You can listen to that here: https://podcasters.
How did you build your audience on social media?
It’s taken a while, I think authenticity is important and also consistency. You should post frequently and let people know what’s going on in your life and work. It’s a great tool for creatives who want to get their work out there. Each platform is different though, so you need to research and understand what works for each one. X, Instagram, Threads, and Youtube are the main ones I use. Gary Vee talks about this a lot and he’s a great person to listen too.
