Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sarah Lynn. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I am happy most of the time doing comedy. There are definitely difficult moments. Running shows every month is a ton of work and stress. I have cultivated an amazing audience and space, and I always stress out about maintaining it. I get scared of the possibility of losing money. As a producer I have to think about more than my own enjoyment of doing it; I have to think with business sense and make sure the shows I’m producing are sustainable. I do many jobs part-time, and I’m happier that way, I love having my hands in many different things that all contribute to the world in different ways. It keeps the pressure off one thing to be my sole life sustainer as well.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started in comedy by taking a beginner’s class. I fell in love with it right away. I’ve always made people laugh off stage, and I’m a lifelong writer, so writing jokes came very easily to me. I am inspired to write by the absurd things I experience in life. I write about some of the worst things I’ve experienced but find a way to create something good out of it. Comedy is a form of alchemy to me. I have the power to define my story. What sets me apart from others is my strong writing with punchlines you don’t see coming. The shows I produce stand out because we have the most diverse lineups in Michigan and I’m always bringing fresh faces to the stage. I also bring in talent from Canada, Chicago, and other places. My shows speak for themselves. Some people come every month! I’m proud that I’ve been running a successful show for over a year now. I’m proud I’ve started producing variety shows. I m also proud that I raised over $2000 at my Comedy for Palestine fundraiser, and over $800 at my Variety Show for Sudan and Congo this year.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My comedy journey is driven by the goal of destigmatizing mental health and helping people understand different identities. I talk very openly about my struggles with mental health and about my experiences as a queer and autistic person. I help dispel myths and misconceptions about these communities, and open people’s minds. I will never be silent about who I am. People in my communities have reached out to me about how much they appreciate me being open about it as well. Jokes can really enlighten others.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is seeing people’s faces light up at my jokes, and hearing how much they enjoyed all of the comedians at my shows. All of the hard work I put in producing and hosting my shows pays off every time. My audience is super appreciative and supportive. Seeing people enjoy themselves genuinely for 90 minutes refuels me to keep going.
